Grigor Dimitrov vs Tomas Machac preview
Third seed Grigor Dimitrov will take on Tomas Machac in the second round of the Erste Bank Open 2024.
Dimitrov began his campaign in Vienna against Zhang Zhizhen. He dropped serve in the very first game of the match and eventually trailed 3-1. The Bulgarian staged a quick turnaround and swept five of the next six games to take the first set.
Both players went toe-to-toe in the second set. Each of them had a few break point chances early on in the set but neither capitalized on their opportunities. Zhang later served to stay in the match at 6-5, and Dimitrov made his move to secure a break and register a 6-4, 7-5 win.
Machac was up against Fabian Marozsan in the first round. The opening set went down to a tie-break, in which the Czech came out on top to claim the set. He steamrolled his opponent in the next set and conceded only one game in it to wrap up a 7-6 (5), 6-1 win.
Grigor Dimitrov vs Tomas Machac head-to-head
This will be the first career meeting between the two, so the head-to-head stands at 0-0 for now.

Grigor Dimitrov vs Tomas Machac prediction
Dimitrov overcame a slow start to get the better of Zhang in his opener. He won 83 percent of his first serve points and struck 32 winners against 24 unforced errors. Machac played some equally impressive tennis to oust Marozsan. He didn't face a single break point, won 90 percent of points on the back of his first serve, and hit 37 winners compared to 25 unforced errors.
Machac has a 3-7 record against top 10 players this season. Andrey Rublev was his first scalp of the year, followed by Novak Djokovic, and more recently Carlos Alcaraz in Shanghai. With some quality wins under his belt, he can certainly pose a threat to Dimitrov and take him down.
As for the Bulgarian, he needs this win to keep his hopes of qualifying for the ATP Finals afloat. He is currently 10th in the race to Turin, and a title in Vienna could push him to ninth. He has an 8-6 record at the venue, with a semifinal finish in 2022 being his best result.
Dimitrov also has a 37-7 record against players ranked outside the top 20 this year. He has been in pretty good form for most of the season, and while Machac has the potential to cause an upset, the Bulgarian should be able to keep him at bay to advance further.
Pick: Grigor Dimitrov to win in three sets.
