Wimbledon 2015: Day 5 results

Novak Djokovic celebrates his third round win over Bernard Tomic

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic continued his impressive run at Wimbledon with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over Bernard Tomic. Tomic looked like the better in the early goings of the match, but the Serb got things back in control as he dictated points from the baseline.

A solitary break in sets two and three was sufficient for Djokovic to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the seventh consecutive year. He will face South African Kevin Anderson in Round 4, who beat Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-3. 

Stan Wawrinka plays a backhand in his win over Fernando Verdasco in the third round

Reigning French Open champion Stan Wawrinka cruised to the Round of 16 after a comfortable 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Fernando Verdasco. The Swiss will take on David Goffin in the fourth round. The Belgian beat Marcos Baghdatis 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 earlier in the day.

2014 semifnalists here, Milos Raonic and Grigor Dimitrov bowed out of the Championships. Raonic lost to Nick Kyrgios 7-5, 5-7, 6-7 (3), 3-6. It was a battle of first serves, but the Australian dominated in the rallies as well.  Dimitrov looked like a shadow of himself as Richard Gasquet did not let the Bulgarian to settle in the match. The Frenchman won 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Serena Williams shakes hands with Heather Watson after their third round match

In the women’s section, World No. 1 Serena Williams survived a scare against Brit Heather Watson. Watson came from a set down to force a decider. She lead 3-0 with a double break, but the American fought back superbly, to first nullify the advantage and then went on to break Watson’s serve in the twelfth game to seal the match in her favour. She won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.

Maria Sharapova did not have any trouble in her 6-4, 6-3 win over Irina Camelia Begu. The Russian hit 11 winners and committed just 15 unforced errors in the match. 

French Open runner-up Lucie Safarova beat Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, while Venus Willliams continued her fine form as she won 6-3, 6-2 over Aleksandra Krunic.

Venus will face her sister Serena for a place in the quarterfinal. Sharapova will take on Zarina Diyas, who beat Andrea Petkovic 7-5, 6-4.
