Wimbledon 2015: Results of Day 3
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic got the better of Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2, 6-3 to move to the third round. The Serb rallied back from a break down in the first set and found his rhythm never allowing Nieminen to come back into the match.
Djokovic was successful at the net, winning 87% points and hit 38 winners in the match. The World No. 1 was meager on unforced errors as well, committing just 13 in the 1 hour and 31 minutes encounter.
He will next face Bernard Tomic, who ousted Pierre-Hugues Herbert 7-6 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (5).
2014 US Open champion survived a scare against Ricardas Berankis, coming through eventually 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-5. It was difficult to separate both players at one point as both hit a combined 116 winners in the match. Cilic committed 26 unforced errors to Berankis’ 25.
Berankis double faulted on match point. Cilic’s next opponent is John Isner. The American beat Matthew Ebden 6-2, 7-6 (8), 6-4.
The biggest news of the day was however, Kei Nishikori’s withdrawal from the Championships due to a calf injury. He had come through a tough five-setter against Simone Bolelli in his opening round.
Reigning French Open champion Stan Wawrinka looked at ease as he dispatched Victor Estrella Burgos 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 in 90 minutes. No. 7 seed Milos Raonic continued his impressive comeback from injury with a 6-0, 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4) win over Germany’s Tommy Haas. Grigor Dimitrov was also a straight sets victor over Steve Johnson 7-6 (8), 6-2, 7-6 (2).
No. 32 seed Dominic Thiem lost to Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 in a marathon match on Court No. 3.
No. 7 seed in the women’s draw Ana Ivanovic was stunned 3-6, 4-6 by qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The Serb was outplayed right from the start by the American.
Maria Sharapova overcame Richel Hogencamp 6-3, 6-1 in just 64 minutes on Court 2. The Russian is looking for her second Wimbledon title.
World No. 1 Serena Williams was ruthless in her 6-4, 6-1 win over Timea Babos. The Hungarian looked in good form in the early goings of the match, but Serena was too good as she saved break points before wrapping up the match in 58 minutes.
