Wimbledon 2015: Top 5 matches to watch on Day 3

The 2015 Wimbledon Championships enters its third day and the top half of the draw in both men’s and women’s section will play their second round matches today. Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams, both seeded No. 1 will look to progress without any hiccups, while young guns can cause an upset or two at the Championships.

Here are 5 matches shouldn’t miss on Day 3:

  1. Fernando Verdasco Vs Dominic Thiem

Dominic Thiem, the last seeded player at this year’s Championships beat Dudi Sela in four sets in the first round on Monday. His opponent in the second round, Fernando Verdasco edged out Martin Klizan 13-11 in the fifth.

Thiem played in Stuttgart, Halle and Nottingham before coming to Wimbledon, but couldn’t progress beyond the second round in all of them. It was a similar case for Verdasco who failed to reach the third round in s’ Hertogenbosch and Queen’s.

The two haven’t met before, but this match could go the distance.

Match Time: Around 7:30 pm IST.

  1.  Liam Broady Vs David Goffin

Liam Broady took out Australia’s Marinko Matosevic in a five-set thriller on the first day. The Brit will look to cause another upset when he takes on No. 16 seed David Goffin on Wednesday.

Goffin came through in straight sets against Horacio Zeballos in Round 1, but with the crowd backing Broady in the second round, it will be interesting to see how the Belgian responds in presssure situations.

This is the pair’s first meeting.

Match time: 4 pm IST.

  1. Bethanie Mattek-Sands Vs Ana Ivanovic

2008 Roland Garros champion Ana Ivanovic reached the semifinals in Paris last month. The Serb is striking the ball really well and is more confident in her game at the moment. She had a comfortable win over Yi-Fan Xu in the first round for the loss of just two games.

Her opponent Bethanie Mattek-Sands also cruised in her first round encounter against 2015 French Open quarterfinalist Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium.

Sands and Ivanovic have played each other twice in the past – at the Madrid Masters in 2011 and 2013. Both matches have been three-set encounters with the duo splitting them.

Can a change of surface provide us another exciting three-setter? It remains to be seen.

Match Time: Around 7:30 pm IST.
