Wimbledon 2016: Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis reach third round; Leander Paes exits men’s doubles
Top seeds and defending champions Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis had an easy outing on Middle Sunday of the 2016 Wimbledon Championships as they breezed into the third round of women’s doubles tennis. The Indo-Swiss duo trounced the Japanese combine of Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato 6-3, 6-1 in the second round contest.
Mirza and Hingis were in impeccable form as they made in-roads into their opponents’ serves five times and had 76% of their first serves in.
They next face the American-Latvian pair of Christina McHale and Jelena Ostapenko.
Leander Paes out of men’s doubles
All hopes of a Leander Paes versus Rohan Bopanna face-off were washed away as the former World No. 1 crashed out of the men’s doubles event in the second round. Paes, who has teamed up with Marcin Matkowski, lost 3-6, 2-6 to the tenth seeds Henri Kontinen and John Peers.
The Indo-Polish duo was broken thrice in this 62-minute contest.
If they had won, their next opponents would have been the sixth seeds Bopanna and Florin Mergea.
Karman Thandi wins
India’s rising talent Karman Kaur Thandi made a winning start to her campaign in girls’ singles on Sunday. The 18-year-old beat Paraguay’s Lara Escauriza 7-6(1), 7-5 to enter the second round.
