Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev preview

Carlos Alcaraz of Spain will take on Daniil Medvedev of Russia on Friday, July 12. Alcaraz has been in reasonably good form at this year's Wimbledon. He has dropped a total of four sets in five matches in the tournament so far.

The 21-year-old French Open champion is very much in contention to become the second Spaniard after Rafael Nadal to win the Channel Slam. He beat Mark Lajal and Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets in his first two matches.

Alcaraz then beat Frances Tiafoe in a tough five-setter in the third round and prevailed over Ugo Humbert in four sets in the fourth round. Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinal to reach the last four.

Medvedev, meanwhile, beat Aleksandar Kovacevic in straight sets in the first round. He then beat Alexandre Muller in the second round in four sets and Jan-Lennard Struff in four sets in the third.

The 28-year-old Russian won by a walkover against Grigor Dimitrov after playing only eight games in the first set in the fourth round. However, Medvedev then went through an epic five-setter in the quarterfinal to beat World No. 1 Jannik Sinner 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3 to reach the semifinal.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Daniil Medvedev prediction

Alcaraz is the defending champion at Wimbledon and it will take a great effort from any player to topple him this year too. However, as Medvedev showed in the match against Sinner, he is well capable of making such an effort.

Medvedev, however, cannot win the match if he allows Alcaraz to dictate terms with his fantastic forehand. The Russian will have to direct a lot of traffic towards the Spaniard's backhand and then pull the trigger with his powerful down-the-line backhand.

Alcaraz has the better net-skills, drop shots, and lobs of the two players, but Medvedev has the better serve, which can make a lot of difference on grass. It should be a close match by all means, with Alcaraz being the favorite to sneak through.

Pick: Alcaraz in five sets.
