Fourth seed Elena Rybakina will square off against former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in the third round of the 2024 Wimbledon.
Rybakina secured a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse to reach the second round, where she was up against Laura Siegemund. The Kazakh fended off a couple of break points in the very first game of the match. and then broke her opponent's serve to go 3-1 up.
However, Siegemund broke back immediately to remain on even terms. Rybakina snagged another break in the eighth game of the set and then closed out the set in the following game to take the lead.
Siegemund initially gave up her lead in the second set but secured another break of serve towards the end, and didn't make the same mistake twice. With the match now in a decider, Rybakina raised her level to beat her opponent 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
Wozniacki handed Alycia Parks a 6-2, 6-0 beatdown to move into the second round, where Leylah Fernandez awaited her. Both players had a few break-point chances in the first set but it was the Dane who made the most of it, going on a three-game run towards the end to claim the set.
Fernandez started the second set by bagging three games on the trot, with Wozniacki nabbing the next two. The momentum swung back in the Canadian's favor as she swept the next three games to take the set.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the decider, the match was suspended for an hour and later moved to Court 1 to finish the proceedings under the roof. Wozniacki saved a couple of match points on her own serve at 5-4 and broke Fernandez's serve in the next game. The Dane then closed out the match for a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win.

Wozniacki staged an escape act to sneak past the in-form Fernandez. Rybakina was pushed to three sets by Siegemund as well and managed to subdue her with some precise shotmaking in the end.
Wozniacki's defensive tactics still give the young guns a nightmare as she's able to keep up with them until the very end. Rybakina will need to have an excellent serving day, on the back of which she has a shot to blow the Dane off the court.
However, Wozniacki's relentless defense could extract plenty of errors from Rybakina's racquet. The latter is a former Wimbledon champion, and has had solid results this year, though with so many upsets already this week, the Dane could spring yet another one.
