Elina Svitolina took out two-time Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur to return to the Grand Slam’s second week, where she will take on Wang Xinyu on Monday.
Svitolina, the 21st seed at this year’s tournament, has been in full flight in her last two matches. Before ousting Jabeur 6-1, 7-6(4), she had also taken out the big-hitting Jule Niemeier in straight sets. The only time that she faced a threat was in her opener against Magda Linette, but she managed to battle through 7-5, 6-7(9), 6-3.
The Ukrainian's sophomore season after returning from maternity leave has been solid and she comes into the Wimbledon second week with a decent 21-12 win-loss.
Xinyu, meanwhile, continued her solid march into the second week. The Chinese player has battled hard, coming through in three-set marathons in each of her three matches so far. Her biggest win came against the fifth seed Jessica Pegula in the second round.
The Chinese, who had ousted Viktoriya Tomova in her opener, posted a battling 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-1 win over Pegula and backed it up with another three-set victory over home favorite Harriet Dart. Her run has helped improve her season’s win-loss to 15-10.

Elina Svitolina had staged one of the biggest upsets at last year’s Wimbledon by taking out World No. 1 Iga Swiatek en route to the semifinals. She has now backed it up with another big win over two-time finalist Ons Jabeur.
The Ukrainian’s brand of counterpunching tennis is not the best-suited for grass, but she has made active adjustments to her game and plays with more aggression now. She was always strong on the legs and the willingness to stay low while hitting the groundstrokes is rewarded on grass.
Against someone like Wang Xinyu, who likes to hit the ball big from the baseline, Svitolina will need to combine both her vintage counterpunching and newfound aggression.
Xinyu is prone to overpressing when put under pressure. If Svitolina can continue to press forward while not giving away too many free points, she should be able to get the upper hand.
