Eighth seed Iga Swiatek will face off against unseeded Polina Kudermetova in the first round (Round of 128) of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday, July 1.
Swiatek’s season so far has been a blend of ups and downs. While she missed out on capturing the Australian Open and wasn’t able to defend her French Open title, she’s still managed to deliver a solid level of consistency, reaching the quarterfinals or semifinals in most of the tournaments she’s entered.
The Pole put her Roland Garros heartbreak behind her and began the grasscourt season at the Bad Homburg Open just a week ago. She made it all the way to the final, where she ultimately fell to Jessica Pegula in straight sets. Despite the loss, the confidence from that run is something she’ll look to carry into her campaign at SW19.
Meanwhile, Kudermetova had a promising start to 2025, reaching the final of the Brisbane International, where she fell to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. However, her form has dipped since then, with early exits becoming a pattern.
Her struggles extended to the Grand Slams as well, with first-round losses at both the Australian Open and the French Open. Her grasscourt season didn’t begin on a high note either, as she crashed out in the opening round of the Libema Open.

Iga Swiatek kicks off her Wimbledon 2025 campaign against Russia’s Polina Kudermetova. On paper, this looks like a manageable opener for the former World No. 1, but grass has often brought its own set of challenges for her.
Swiatek comes into Wimbledon with some solid match play under her belt, having reached the final in Bad Homburg. While she’s most comfortable on clay, the Pole has steadily worked on adapting her game to grass, shortening her backswing, coming forward more, and trying to keep points quick. Her footwork and spin-heavy forehand don’t translate quite as naturally to this surface, but she’s learning fast.
While Kudermetova has shown flashes of potential, taking on someone of Swiatek’s calibre is a whole different test. She’ll need to stay aggressive and try to disrupt her opponent's rhythm early; otherwise, the match could run away from her.
That said, Iga Swiatek can’t afford to start flat. Grass rewards bold shot-making, and if the Russian comes out swinging freely, she will need to impose herself early. But all things considered, this looks like a match the Pole should navigate confidently en route to the second round.
