WTA Championship Finals 2015: Mirza-Hingis, Radwanska take title wins
The top-ranked Indo-Swiss pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis took the WTA title at Singapore, steamrolling 8th seeds Garbine Muguruza and Carla Suarez-Navarro in a straight sets victory 6-0, 6-3.
Taking the first set without conceding a game, the two hit 4 aces to their competitors’ 1 as they committed two double faults in the course of the match.
Today marked the pair’s 9th title of the year; in addition to their WTA titles, the pair won Wimbledon and the US Open earlier this year as well. 3 of those came on the trot after their US Open win – at Guangzhou, Wuhan and Beijing.
Prior to their final victory, the two, who have been unstoppable since they became doubles partners earlier in the year, were confirmed to be ending the year as World No. 1s.
5th seed Agnieszka Radwanska took title victory at the WTA Finals in Singapore, beating 4th seed Petra Kvitova today 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
Polish ace Radwanska had not been a frontrunner for the title early on in the tournament, losing two of her round robin matches – against Maria Sharapova and Flavia Pennetta; however, she went on to beat tournament top seed Simona Halep in straight sets to face Garbine Muguruza in the semi-finals. Down a set in that match, Radwanska came back to take the other two sets to take an eventual win.
Runner-up Kvitova took an upset herself, playing a strong Maria Sharapova in the other semi-final at the tournament and beating her in straight sets. The Czech ace, who prior to this match was at a world no. 5 ranking, returns to tennis after being weakened by a second bout of mononucleosis.
Down a set, Kvitova played strong tennis to take the second set and take the match to a 3 setter. She hit a whopping 51 unforced errors, however, with a mere 5 from Radwanska.
Today’s final was Radwanska’s last professional tennis match of the year; Kvitova now has a Fed Cup challenge ahead of her as the Czech side takes on the Russian Fed Cup squad, a tournament that will see Kvitova and Sharapova face off again.
This victory takes Radwanska to World No. 5.
