Aryna Sabalenka vs Magdalena Frech preview
Top seed Aryna Sabalenka will take on Magdalena French in the quarterfinals of the Wuhan Open on Friday.
Sabalenka has added two more majors to her locker this year after winning the Australian Open in 2023. She successfully defended her crown in Melbourne and captured her maiden title in New York in 2024. The Belarusian defeated Jessica Pegula in straight sets in the final, 7-5, 7-5.
Sabalenka entered Wuhan on the back of a quarterfinal exit in Beijing, at the hands of Karolina Muchova. She started her campaign by cruising past Katerina Siniakova in the second round and then showed her class against Yulia Putintseva in the third. The 26-year-old outlasted the Kazakh in a grueling three-set encounter, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
Magdalena Frech, meanwhile, has had a solid year so far, chalking up 41 wins from 67 matches, including a title-winning run in the Guadalajara Open. She also secured a runner-up finish in Prague, where she lost to Magda Linette in straight sets in the final.
The Pole entered Wuhan on the back of a third round exit in Beijing. She has outfoxed the likes of Mai Hontama, Emma Navarro, and Beatriz Haddad Maia en route to the quarterfinals. Frech defeated the Brazilian Haddad Maia in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka vs Magdalena Frech prediction
Sabalenka has chalked up 17 wins from her last 18 matches on tour. She turned things around brilliantly after losing the first set against Putintseva in her last match and will fancy her chances against an unseeded player in the quarterfinals. The Belarusian is a two-time champion at the Wuhan Open and is yet to lose a match at the event.
Frech, on the other hand, has also garnered 10 wins from her last 11 matches on tour. She stunned the ninth seed Haddad Maia in the third round and will hope to raise her level against Sabalenka in the last eight. The Pole has a formidable all-round game and decent experience on tour.
The Wuhan crowd can expect a close contest between the duo in the quarterfinals. Both players have looked sharp in the last few weeks, but Sabalenka will still be a heavy favorite to come out on top. The top seed likes to function from the baseline and could be too hot to handle for the Pole once she finds her form.
Pick: Sabalenka to win in straight-sets.
