World No. 28 Leylah Fernandez will take on World No. 66 Kamilla Rakhimova in the second round of the Wuhan Open on Wednesday.
Fernandez has had a mixed season so far, considering her exceptional talent, on the main tour. After runs to the quarterfinals in Doha and Birmingham, she secured a runner-up finish in Eastbourne, where she lost to Daria Kasatkina in the finals.
The Canadian entered Wuhan on the back of a second-round exit in Beijing. She started her campaign with a resilient win against Diana Shnaider in the first round 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3. Apart from the Eastbourne final, Fernandez is yet to make a notable contribution on the main tour this year.
Kamilla Rakhimova, meanwhile, has had a good season so far by her standards. After second-round exits in Melbourne and Austin, she reached the semifinals of the Copa Colsanitas and the Morocco Open. She outfoxed Camilla Rosatello and Elisabetta Cocciaretto in Rabat but fell short against Mayar Sherif in the last four.
The 23-year-old entered Wuhan on the back of a second-round exit in Beijing. She secured a place in the main draw via the qualifiers and then defeated Moyuka Uchijima in the first round. Rakhimova outclassed the Japanese in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.

Leylah Fernandez won the Hong Kong Open last year but is yet to win a trophy in 2024. The Canadian showed her class against Schnaider in the previous round and won 79% of her first-serve points against the Russian. She also fired seven aces and committed 10 double faults during the entire match.
Rakhimova entered the US Open and China Open via the qualifiers. She is slowly improving her game on the main tour and seems close to recording a strong result this year. The Russian hardly broke a sweat in the previous round, winning 70% of her first points against Uchijima.
