About Ryder Cup

In 1927, the Ryder Cup made its debut at the Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts, marking the beginning of a storied tradition that continues to thrive today. This prestigious men's golf tournament occurs biennially and showcases teams representing both Europe and the United States. The unique aspect of the competition lies in its alternating locations, with matches being held at golf courses in both the United States and Europe. It takes its name from Samuel Ryder, an English businessman and golf enthusiast, who donated the trophy.

The two masterminds for this tournament are the Ryder Cup Europe and the PGA of America. The Ryder Cup is not only a mere golf championship, it is also about bringing continents together and celebrating the game of golf. For instance, the Ryder Cup plays a significant role and acts as a connecting dot between the PGA European Tour, the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland and last but not least the PGAs of Europe.

Ryder Cup History

The Ryder Cup is one of the most prestigious athletic competitions in the world. It is a dramatic match-play competition, which pits 24 of the best golfers from Europe and the United States against one another every two years. The Ryder Cup is the epitome of how a sport should be. The game focuses on everything, starting from world-class golf, unity, diversity, passion, drama, tension and sportsmanship. The Ryder Cup is more than a simple sporting event; it's a spiritual journey that honors Samuel Ryder, the organization's founder.

The Ryder Cup started in 1927 and will have its 44th edition this year in Rome, Italy. It used to be the U.S. vs. Great Britain, then included Ireland from 1973-77. In 1979, all continental European players became eligible for Team Europe. Due to World War II, the competition was held back from 1939-45. The 2001 matches were delayed till 2002 because of 9/11, and the 2020 edition was moved to 2021 due to COVID-19.

Ryder Cup 2023 Schedule

The Ryder Cup-like clockwork occurs every two years either in late September or early October. The committee announces that prior to each year's championship. It generally takes place for a total span of three days. The 2023 championship was supposed to take place originally back in 2022 before the 43rd matches were unfortunately postponed into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After several delays and the match being postponed, the 44th Ryder Cup is back in full force.

The Ryder Cup will take place from September 29 and will go on till October 1. Back in 2021, the Ryder Cup was played in the U.S., at the Straits course at Whistling Straits. But this time, it is going to be held in a country full of history, Italy. Hosting the Ryder Cup will also make history as Italy has never been chosen to host a Ryder Cup before. The tournament will take place in the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club; this club isn't new to any professional golf tournaments as the Italian tournament took place here.

As for the detailed schedule, it will be announced soon by the committee once all the members of each team have been chosen.

Ryder Cup 2023 Course

The 2023 Ryder Cup will be held at the famous world Marco Simone Golf & Country Club. It is a 72-par golf course, with players playing over a stretch of 6.674 m/7.299 m. The Jim Fazio-designed Marco Simone Golf & Country Club has undergone a comprehensive renovation by Tom Fazio II and European Golf Design in preparation for hosting the Ryder Cup in September 2023. The DS AUTOMOBILES Italian Open was held three times at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club during 2022, along with other significant professional and amateur competitions.

Marco Simone Golf & Country Club is unique because it lets all players play in the course from the best length, thanks to the various beginning tees that are supplied (4 for men and 3 for women), making Marco Simone's experience unique and inspiring for everyone. The players who participate in Marco Simone's Golf Course get a true sense of freedom because of the course's extraordinarily broad size.

Players who have Qualified for the 2023 Ryder Cup

For the 2023 biennial competition between the United States and Europe, which will take place at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome from September 25 to October 1st, each team will have six players who automatically qualify. The remaining half of each team's roster will be selected through captain's picks, with Zach Johnson making the picks for the United States and Luke Donald for Europe.

The criteria for determining the six automatic qualifiers differ for each team. U.S. players earn their spots based on the money they have earned between the 2022 and 2023 BMW Championships. The top six players on the points list after the BMW Championships secured their spots on the U.S. team.

On the other hand, the European team follows two criteria to determine its six automatic qualifiers. They consider a European Points list, which is based on points earned on the DP World Tour, and a World Points list, which relies on the Official World Golf Ranking. Players who perform well according to these criteria will earn their place on the European team.
