Looking back at Cooper Flagg's high school stats as he prepares for his Duke Blue Devils debut
As Cooper Flagg prepares for his highly anticipated collegiate debut with the Duke Blue Devils, his impressive high school career is a testament to his talent and potential. A native of Newport, Maine, Flagg started his journey at Nokomis Regional High School.
Here is a highlight of his school days, where he ranked No. 1:
He set the record for being the only freshman to win the Maine Gatorade Player of the Year. In his prep year, the 6-foot-9 two-way player recorded 20.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 3.7 steals per game, giving him a formal "star" title from day one.
Flagg later moved to Montverde Academy in Florida, a school of excellence in elite basketball talent development. In his final school year at Montverde, Flagg paraded his complete game, recording 16.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.7 blocks per game.
His leadership on the court helped Montverde secure a perfect 33-0 record and claim the national championship title at the Chipotle High School Nationals. His outstanding play earned him Gatorade National Player of the Year, Naismith Player of the Year and a McDonald's All-American spot.
Cooper Flagg's dominance wasn’t limited to high school competition. At the 2022 Nike EYBL Peach Jam, he turned heads by averaging 25.5 points, 13.0 rebounds and 6.9 blocks per game, highlighted by an astonishing performance in which he recorded 38 points, 16 rebounds and 12 blocks.
Cooper Flagg Avoids the Hype as Duke Prepares for Season Opener
Cooper Flagg, the nation's top recruit, has earned widespread attention for his standout performances in All-Star games and viral moments on YouTube. As Duke gears up to begin the 2024-25 season on Oct. 19, Blue Devils coach Jon Scheyer noted Flagg’s efforts to block out the noise and focus on competition.
"I've seen a lot of different seasons, different hype, different expectations," Scheyer told ESPN. "Cooper, I don't think he likes all the attention, to be honest. He's all about just wanting to be like the other guys -- wanting to win, wanting to compete. And he's done a great job of setting the tone for all of that."
Speaking at Duke’s media day, Cooper Flagg acknowledged the excitement surrounding his arrival on campus. Since the start of classes, he has embraced interactions with fellow students, even if they come with a lot of fanfare.
"There's always eyes everywhere. When I first got here, some of the students were kind of going crazy," Flagg said. "But it's a compliment that shows all the hard work you've put in and people are wanting to see you and support you."
Initially part of Duke's 2025 recruiting class, Flagg reclassified to play this season. Many observers believe he will be the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA draft.
