2025 class prospect & 5-star safety Trey McNutt narrows his commitment to Top-5 schools
Five-star player Trey McNutt, from Shaker Heights, Ohio, has been one of the most highly-touted prospects in the 2025 class. After receiving more than 30 offers from college programs, the safety has now announced his commitment to the top-5 list.
McNutt will commit on July 19, choosing from a final list of Ohio State, USC, Oregon, Florida and Texas A&M. He visited the Trojans on May 31, the Gators on June 7, the Aggies on June 13, and the Ducks on June 21. But he is yet to officially visit the Buckeyes.
McNutt is ranked as the No. 1 safety, the No. 2 prospect in Ohio, and the No. 19 overall player in the 2025 class, per 247Sports. On3 places him as the No. 1 safety, the No. 2 prospect in the State and the No. 19 overall player.
As a junior in 2023, McNutt recorded 61 tackles, three tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and 12 pass breakups, while contributing on offense with 611 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He recorded 16 carries for 169 yards and three touchdowns, while also recording 14 receptions for 308 yards and four touchdowns in his sophomore season.
McNutt is also a standout track athlete, having run several sub-11.00 100-meter times as a sophomore in the spring of 2023.
Oregon and Ohio State battle for Trey McNutt's pledge
According to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine, Trey McNutt is currently favored to choose Oregon, who hold the lead with 78.1%. The Ducks' coaching staff has made a strong impression on McNutt, with defensive/cornerbacks graduate assistant coach Rashad Wadood playing a big role.
"Being with coach Wadood, I like him a lot," McNutt told ScoopDuck. "He's a good coach, great coach... He's been hitting my phone every day. Just building more and more relationships with me."
Head coach Dan Lanning has also left a lasting impact on McNutt.
"And Coach Dan, he set the tone for Oregon and he let me know that they're going for a national championship and that the program is going up and they want me. He let me know that I'm at the top of their board and him being a defensive coach is pretty cool."
Currently holding the fifth-best 2025 recruiting class, according to 247Sports, the Ducks secured back-to-back 5-star commitments. These are the cornerback Dorian Brew and wide receiver Dakorien Moore earlier this month.
Despite Oregon's strong push, Ohio State remains a serious contender with a 15.7% chance to land McNutt. His connection to the Buckeyes runs deep, as McNutt is the son of former OSU defensive back Richard McNutt.
Richard was a three-year letter winner and part of the 2002 national championship team. Besides this, the program's coaching staff also amazed him.
“Obviously, they’re the Buckeyes, man," McNutt told On3. "They’re a great football team, great program, know that they’re going to have chances to win the national championship. They all work over there, the coaching staff, coach (Tim Walton), coach (Matt) Guerrieri, they’ve got an elite coaching staff over there. Really, it’s just a matter of where’s home for me.”
Adding McNutt to the defense would be a huge boost for Ohio State, who already have three safeties committed in the 2025 class: Cody Haddad, Faheem Delane and DeShawn Stewart.
