4-star tight end Jamel Howse becomes the latest addition to Shane Beamer and South Carolina's recruiting class
In a significant boost for South Carolina football, four-star tight end Jamel Howse Jr. has committed to the Gamecocks, adding to head coach Shane Beamer's 2026 recruiting class. This pledge, announced on Saturday, will considerably boost Beamer's program.
Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 214 pounds, Jamel Howse is ranked as the No. 170 overall prospect in the nation and the No. 9 tight end by the 247Sports Composite.
The talented recruit, hailing from Newberry High School, is also the No. 2 player in South Carolina for the 2026 Class. He chose South Carolina over several other programs, including West Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida.
South Carolina first extended an offer to Howse in December 2023. His decision was heavily influenced by the coaching staff and the program's proximity to his home.
"I will be committing to South Carolina because it's home and the coaches are wonderful people. They make me feel like I'm home which I am," Howse told TheBigSpur.
Jamel Howse spoke highly of head coach Shane Beamer, praising his approach to the game and the personal connection they’ve built.
“What really excites me about Coach Beamer is that he’s a wonderful coach so if I need anything I know he’ll be the person I’ll go to,” Howse said.
Howse's visits to Columbia in the spring game of April and the LSU game of September remain etched in his memory owing to the enthusiastic fans and the family-like atmosphere the coaching staff provided that he loved so much.
“Their fanbase is amazing," he added. "The coaches are wonderful people. They make me feel like I’m at home. The environment is amazing. I love how they are all family up there and how much they love football. They have a strong reputation and dedicated fanbase.”
Gamecocks tight end room gets stronger as Jamel Howse joins the 2026 Class
At the Carolina Coaches Combine in Spartanburg, Howse showed off his athleticism with a 4.68-second 40-yard dash, a 22.8-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-8 broad jump, and a 4.37 shuttle run. With an amazing 83-inch wingspan, Howse demonstrated his physical abilities as a formidable offensive weapon.
South Carolina tight ends coach Shawn Elliott has big plans for Howse, detailing how the team intends to maximize his versatility.
“I like how Coach Elliott told me I can really do anything,” Howse told 247 Sports. “He can split me out wide, bring me down, motion me. I’m cool with all that. I can do it all.”
Jamel Howse's commitment brings the Gamecocks’ 2026 class to four pledges, joining linebacker Rodney Colton Jr., EDGE Keenan Britt, and offensive lineman Anthony Baxter.
