5-star Texas commit Jonah Williams shows off impressive playing abilities during Week 1 showdown
Jonah Williams, a five-star safety committed to the University of Texas for the 2025 class, dominated both offensively and defensively in a thrilling victory against Manvel High School during the Week 1 showdown. Williams scored 5 touchdowns: 1 kick return, 2 receiving, 2 rushing points.
Williams' ability to overpower defenders and create opportunities for his team was evident throughout the game, as he opened up significant gaps for the running game and provided solid protection for his quarterback against speed rushers.
Known for his exceptional athleticism, strength, and technique, Jonah Williams excelled in multiple roles, showcasing why he is regarded as the No. 1 safety and the No. 10 overall recruit in his class according to 247Sports Composite rankings.
He selected the Longhorns ahead of thirty other programs, including LSU, Texas A&M, USC, Oregon and Oklahoma, and he also stands out as a dual-sport athlete. As a baseball player, Williams shows amazing play as the left-handed pitcher, managing a 94 MPH throw.
According to Hunter Shelton of On3, Jonah Williams “has the skill level to be a wide receiver prospect if he wanted.
"He has the skill level to be a wide receiver prospect if he wanted. A two-sport standout, as a talented baseball player who throws 94 MPH as a left-handed pitcher.
"Can continue making strides with his form and physicality as a tackler. Could potentially outgrow the safety spot due to his bigger frame. Rare movement skills and size give him the upside to be a game-changing movable piece at the college and pro level.”
Jonah Williams' commitment strengthens Texas' 2025 recruiting cycle
Standing at 6-foot-3.5 and weighing 206 pounds, Jonah Williams is the latest addition to head coach Steve Sarkisian’s 2025 recruiting class at Texas, marking the 18th commit. Williams praised the Texas coaching staff, telling On3:
“The coaching staff is great! I mean they check all the boxes that I want in a college.”
Jonah Williams' return visit to the Texas campus in late July solidified his decision.
“You know they send guys to the league,” Williams said. “If you’re a good player you will go to the league from anywhere but why not do it for the home state? And I have a lot of family that lives in the Austin area so I got to visit with them.”
Blake Gideon, his future position coach, played a significant role in securing Williams' commitment, along with defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski. Williams said:
“I’m close with Coach Gideon. I’m close with the DC.”
Last season, Williams made a big impact with 20 receptions for 474 yards, eight touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. On defense, he recorded 58 tackles, four interceptions (three returned for touchdowns) and several key plays on special teams.
