"Daddy gon beat that a**": Fans react to Ohio State alum Kirk Herbstreit's son Chase Herbstreit's Michigan commitment
Three-star quarterback Chase Herbstreit committed to Michigan's 2025 class on Sunday. The St. Xavier (Ohio) standout is the son of ESPN analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit, who starred for the Buckeyes from 1989 to 1993.
Despite his father's strong ties to Ohio State, Chase's decision to join the Buckeyes' archrival in Ann Arbor sparked reactions from netizens.
"daddy gon beat that a**," a fan wrote.
"Kirk throwing up somewhere right now," one wrote.
"I want to hear @KirkHerbstreit honest thoughts and opinions. not the water downed for media post," one wrote.
Meanwhile, Michigan has already locked in the nation's No. 1 quarterback, Bryce Underwood, in the 2025 class. The Wolverines flipped him from LSU with a big NIL deal and also got people like NFL GOAT Tom Brady involved in his recruitment process.
Underwood would be the undisputed QB1 for Michigan, and so fans wondered about Herbstreit's decision to commit to a school where his potential playing time seems so unpromising.
"umm didn’t he know he won’t get any playing time for the next 3 years?" one wrote.
"Committed to the bench behind Bryce underwood? Ion get it," one wrote.
"Bro wants to ride the bench 😭," one wrote.
Herbstreit has thrown for 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, while also adding 649 rushing yards and eight scores. On3’s Director of Scouting, Charles Power, praised his grasp of pro-style offensive schemes and his ability to deliver accurate intermediate throws.
Chase Herbstreit is the No. 128 quarterback in the 2025 class and the No. 102 recruit in Ohio, according to On3. With his commitment, Michigan is up to 22 players in the 2025 class. Besides Bryce Underwood, the Wolverines' cycle is headlined by Andrew Babalola, Andrew Marsh, Nate Marshall, Shamari Earls and Kainoa Winston, among others.
Kirk Herbstreit reacts to son Chase Herbstreit's Michigan commitment
Kirk Herbstreit didn’t make it too late to react to Chase Herbstreit's commitment to Michigan.
"So proud of you Chase! Congratulations on this incredible opportunity. Look forward to watching you continue to grow and develop at Michigan. Keep grinding!!" Herbstreit posted on X.
In a previous interview with On3, Kirk praised Chase’s competitive nature and resilience, traits he believes set his son apart.
“Whether he’s playing ping-pong, golf, or 1-on-1 hoops, he’s going to find a way to win,” Kirk said. “And that’s how he is on the football field—ultra-competitive, which I think is really important at that position.”
Chase Herbstreit is following in the footsteps of his football-playing brothers. Tye and Jake Herbstreit both walked on at Clemson, with Jake later transferring to Ohio State. Zak Herbstreit, another of Chase's brothers, is a walk-on tight end at Ohio State.
