De La Salle High School set to face NFL Academy in an international game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
The De La Salle Spartans are set to make history with a trip to London. As part of the NFL's efforts to expand the game globally, the Spartans will face off against the NFL Academy, a European development team, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday.
According to Sports Illustrated, a 59-member squad, along with their families and coaching staff, traveled to the United Kingdom on Thursday evening. The team, led by coach Justin Alumbaugh, is excited about this opportunity.
"Truly no idea," Alumbaugh said. "Ninety-one in travel party. Coaches. Wives. Families adds another 60. Maybe double that. So like 400?"
However, the team is also facing challenges in preparing for the trip. The drastic change in climate, from California's scorching temperatures to London's cooler conditions, requires adjustments.
Despite the challenges, the Spartans, including players, coaches, families and supporters, are ready to represent De La Salle on the international stage.
The game will take place two days after the NFL Week 5 matchup between New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings at the same stadium.
Spartans is one of the top-ranked high school football teams in California
The De La Salle Spartans have established themselves as a powerhouse in California high school football as they’re No. 1 in the North Coast Section. According to SBLive Sports, they’re also No. 6 in the state.
The Spartans come with a legacy that includes seven state championships and a 151-game win streak (from 1992 to 2004). They also managed to get a book written about them, which was later adapted into a movie called “When the Game Stands Tall.” The movie starred Jim Caviezel, Michael Chiklis and Laura Dern.
The current team, led by quarterback Toa Faavae, running backs Derrick Blanche, Dominic Kelley and Duece Jones-Drew, and receivers Jayden Nicholas and Ant Dean, possess the speed, athleticism and skill to compete at the highest level.
The defense is anchored by linebackers Niko Baumgartner and Bubba Vargas.
