In a thrilling showdown, Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel threw two touchdown passes and ran for a late score, as the No. 3-ranked Oregon Ducks narrowly edged out the No. 2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday (32-31).
In his first season with Oregon (6-0, 3-0 Big Ten Conference), Gabriel has completed 23 of 34 passes for 341 yards while also running for 32 yards on four carries so far.
"Every time I went and looked at his eyes tonight I saw a guy who was composed and ready for his next moment,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said in the postgame conference. “He played really really well tonight in some really big moments.”
With six minutes left and the Ducks trailing 31-29, Gabriel led the charge to secure the victory.
"We all knew we were getting a dogfight, two heavyweights going at it," Gabriel said. "That's what college football is all about."
Gabriel completed five passes for 41 yards on the final drive, which ultimately stalled at Ohio State’s 1-yard line. However, Atticus Sappington kicked a 19-yard field goal which gave Oregon the lead with 1:47 left.
Gabriel reflected on his football journey and talked about what he had learned from it.
"I've learned a lot at each stop and, more importantly, who I am as a person. At this point in my career, I just appreciate where I am at the present. I've loved every bit of it."
With the win, Oregon remains one of three undefeated teams in the Big Ten along with Penn State (6-0, 3-0) and Indiana (6-0, 3-0).
