“Ever since they knew about Miami, they’ve wanting me to come out": 4-star Miami commit Gavin Nix reveals Florida's effort of flipping his pledge

Maliha

Four-star linebacker Gavin Nix announced his commitment to Miami on July 1. But his recruitment hasn’t slowed down, and Florida is emerging as a strong contender to flip him from the Hurricanes.

“Ever since they knew about Miami, they’ve wanting me to come out week one," Nix told Gators Online. "If it aligns with us, I’ll probably come to that Florida-Miami game. That’s the main one we’ve been talking about."

On3 further reported on Friday that the Gators are keeping an "open line of communication" with Nix and that he could be "in Gainsville this month."

Recruiting coach Larry Williams has played a big role in maintaining strong ties with Nix.

"There are a few guys on the staff that I really built a good relationship with," Nix said. "We talk just to catch up, but it’s really no recruiting stuff though. Mainly right now it’s coach Williams. He’s a cool dude. He’s been there from the get-go and been consistent."

Williams' commitment to Nix and his family goes beyond the typical recruiting pitch. Besides Williams, Gators linebackers coach Ron Roberts and assistant linebackers coach Cannon Gibbs have also been involved in Nix's recruitment.

Gavin Nix has been a standout for IMG Academy's football program, and his journey to becoming a top linebacker began in youth football, where he initially played as a running back before transitioning to the defensive side of the ball.

The 6-foot, 225-pound Nix is only listed as the No. 88 overall prospect in the nation, the No. 11 linebacker in the 2025 class and the No. 15 in Florida, according to 247Sports. During his final season at IMG Academy, he recorded 42 tackles, seven tackles for loss, one sack and five quarterback hurries.

Gavin Nix keeps door open for his recruitment

With more than 20 offers on the table, Gavin Nix chose Miami over Florida State, Miami, Alabama and Oregon, among others. But he is keeping his recruitment door ajar.

"Like they all say, it’s not over until it’s over," Nix told Gators Online. "I’m committed, but my recruitment is not shut down."

Bradenton, Flordia, native Nix is a blue-chip linebacker who embodies the qualities every program looks for in an inside linebacker. His speed and agility make him an ideal fit for Miami's defense, which emphasizes quickness, allowing him to effectively cover tight ends and contribute to various defensive schemes.

Gavin Nix's lateral quickness and ability to trigger in the run game have made him a promising player in the 2025 class, and he is now focused on his upcoming season.

“I feel pretty confident with where I am at now, but we will see. I still have the chance to see how the season goes. I’m just focused on my season and focused on the brotherhood we are building here.”

Currently sitting on 20 commits, Miami's 2025 class is ranked No. 12 in the nation and the No. 3 in the ACC.
