Five-star CB Kade Phillips finalizes commitment decision amid rumors of potential flip
Five-star cornerback and LSU commit Kade Phillips has put to rest rumors about his potential flip back to Texas, according to a report. LSU insider Zack Nagy reports that the High Tower High School (Missouri City, Texas) product canceled a scheduled visit to the Longhorns, instead focusing on finalizing his LSU commitment.
Phillips was initially committed to the Texas Longhorns in June before flipping to the Tigers in August. However, Texas did not back down, and with the recent flipping of five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood from LSU, the Tigers looked vulnerable.
Seeking to take advantage of the confusion in the wake of Underwood's flip to Colorado, Texas intensified its efforts to flip Phillips back. A visit was scheduled for Saturday, which eventually didn’t materialize as the five-star prospect has an unofficial visit to Baton Rouge scheduled for next weekend.
Phillips’ rating experienced a hike recently, moving from four-star to five-star in On3's latest ranking exercise. He is now the nation's No. 4 cornerback, according to On3, highlighting how important he has become going into the early signing period.
It also shows how important it is for LSU to keep him after losing its headline star for the class. The class also has the No. 1 cornerback in the country, DJ Picket, who is also a flip target for top programs.
Kade Phillips’ recruitment process
Kade Phillips has had quite an interesting recruiting experience with 30 college offers on his table. In addition to LSU and Texas, he received offers from Michigan, Nebraska, Utah, Ole Miss, Kansas, among other programs.
Phillips is a multi-sport athlete who also competes in track and field, with a regional bronze medal in the long jump. He also competed as a two-way star for his high school varsity football team, featuring as a wide receiver as well as a cornerback.
With 6 feet height and 180 pounds in weight, coupled with 33.5-inch arms and 10.5-inch hands, Phillips cuts the ideal shape of an athlete.
LSU's 2025 recruiting class is ranked No. 6 by On3, headlined by Pickett after the loss of Underwood to Colorado. The Tigers have 25 commits, with three five-star prospects remaining, including running back Harlem Berry.
Brian Kelly's men beat Vanderbilt 24-17 on Saturday to go 7-4 and move to ninth place in the SEC standings.
Their next game is against a struggling Oklahoma at Baton Rouge. It will be their opportunity to close the regular season with a win in front of their fans.
