Former Notre Dame standout and 2024 MLB All-Star Hunter Greene extends his support to California high schools affected by the LA wildfires
Baseball star Hunter Greene has joined the relief efforts to help victims of the Los Angeles wildfires. On Monday, he announced on his X page that he is donating free baseball cleats to all high school and college baseball players affected by the wildfires. He wrote:
"I've got FREE baseball cleats (Value $100 a pair NEW, Metal Spikes ONLY, sizes 9.5-15) for all the travel ball, high school and college baseball players affected by the Palisades, Malibu and Altadena fires. Must show proof of residency.
"Reach out to my community service team manager, Melissa here on my direct message. MUST pickup at my Santa Clarita, CA wharehouse. Spread the word, while supplies last."
The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles started on Jan. 7 and have taken a severe toll on the environment and local communities. The victims count as of Tuesday includes 25 deaths and nearly 200,000 displaced residents. Similarly, more than 13,000 structures have been reportedly destroyed across the region.
The wildfires have been particularly devastating in Palisades and Eaton. This is due to intense Santa Ana winds blowing up to 100 mph and prolonged drought conditions. The disaster has been a challenge for firefighters and residents, resulting in calls for humanitarian aid for victims.
Student-athletes in the affected areas are not spared from the effects of the ongoing crisis. Schools in the areas have been evacuated, and sports facilities are part of the affected structures, making it nearly impossible for athletes to practice. Palisades Charter High School is one of the schools thus affected.
How is Hunter Greene connected to Los Angeles?
Hunter Greene joins a host of donors in supporting the victims of the wildfires, himself being a native of Los Angeles. The Cincinnati Reds pitcher was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1999. He attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, where he played shortstop when he was not pitching.
Greene had a fastball velocity of 93 mph as a freshman. This had increased to 102 mph by his senior year. He finished his high school career with a 1.62 earned run average in 121 innings pitched.
Hunter Greene appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in April 2017, becoming the 13th high school athlete to be featured on the paper’s cover. He was drafted out of high school by the Reds in 2017, joining their farm system instead of playing in college.
