Four-star safety Rashad Johnson flips commitment from Kirby Smart's Georgia to Mike Elko's Texas A&M
Texas A&M is 1-1 after securing a 52-10 win against McNeese on Saturday afternoon at Kyle Field. Before the massive win, coach Mike Elko's program got another victory in the recruitment buzz as four-star South Sumter safety Rashad Johnson flipped his commitment from Georgia to the Aggies.
Johnson committed to Georgia’s 2025 cycle in mid-July after being heavily recruited by the program since May. He was expected to compete for either the safety or star position in the Bulldogs secondary after he chose the program over Louisville, Penn State and Texas A&M.
On Saturday, On3's Hayes Fawcett first reported that the 6-foot-2, 190-pound Bushnell, Florida, native had flipped to the Aggies.
Since then, Johnson shared several posts on his X account confirming his move to College Station. In one of the posts, he posted a photo with Texas A&M defensive backs and safeties coach Ishmael Aristide.
With Johnson's decommitment, Georgia’s 2025 class has 21 commitments. The class has taken a hit, dropping from the No. 1 spot to No. 4 nationally and No. 3 in the Southeastern Conference. However, the school remains in the hunt for other top prospects, including running back Ousmane Kromah, wide receiver Maurice Gleaton and offensive lineman Daniel Davis.
Johnson is the No. 21 prospect to join Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class, which ranks No. 9 in the nation and No. 7 in the SEC. Five-star quarterback Husan Longstreet, four-star cornerback Adonyss Currie, four-star linebacker Noah Mikhail, four-star tight end Kiotti Armstrong and four-star defensive lineman DJ Sanders headline the class.
Johnson joins a defensive backs class that includes Currie, Cobey Sellers, Jamar Beal-Goines and Deyjhon Pettaway.
Why did Rashad Johnson flip from Georgia to Texas A&M?
Rashad Johnson took a visit last week to Texas A&M for the Notre Dame game, which the Aggies lost 23-13. In an earlier interview with On3 following his Georgia commitment, he mentioned the importance of relationships with coaching staff and player development as crucial considerations.
It seems that Texas A&M's coaching staff made an impression strong enough to make him rethink his original commitment.
Johnson’s skill set appears to be a perfect fit for Texas A&M defensive coordinator Jay Bateman’s scheme. While primarily a safety, he has spent time at wide receiver and tight end, and at the next level, he is expected to fully transition to safety.
Rashad Johnson is rated as the No. 391 player in the nation, the No. 34 safety in the 2025 class and the No. 56 player in Florida, per 247Sports Composite.
