“He got a head start before anybody”: 4-star Zion Williams highlights reasons that nudged him towards LSU commitment

Zion Williams, a highly-touted defensive tackle from Lufkin, Texas, has committed to the LSU Tigers, a decision made public on July 4th. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 330 pounds, Williams is a four-star recruit, ranked No. 174 in the ESPN 300 for the class of 2025.

Williams' recruitment marks a major win for LSU's defensive line coach Bo Davis, who successfully outmaneuvered Texas, Texas A&M and other top programs. Williams’ connection with Davis played a pivotal role in his commitment to LSU.

“Why LSU? It instantly felt like home when I first visited the school,” Williams shared with On3. “It was like Lufkin where I knew my way around and felt comfortable in my surroundings.”

Davis hosted Williams for multiple visits, including an official visit in June that solidified LSU’s standing.

“Me and coach Bo have been talking since he was at UT,” Williams explained. “I think he got a head start before anybody because he was the first coach I really got to know well. He knows me well as a person. LSU feels like the parts of my town where I grew up. It’s been fun down there so far.”

The bond between Zion Williams and Davis has been strengthened over the years, making Williams a cornerstone for the future of LSU’s defensive line. Williams emphasized:

“I feel like coach Bo had my best intentions and wants to get me to a position where I can support a family when I have one. It meant a lot to me when he says that he thinks that I have 3-year potential, but I’ll get a degree before I leave.”

Zion Williams' commitment boosts LSU's recruiting success

Zion Williams' choice to commit to LSU is a big win for the Tigers. With his commitment made, LSU now has 13 verbal pledges for the class of 2025. LSU's 2025 recruiting class is the fourth-best in the nation, with Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia ahead.

Zion Williams' relationship with LSU's defensive line coach Bo Davis dates back to Davis' tenure at the University of Texas.

"Coach Bo and I have been talking since his time at UT," Williams told On3's Justin Wells. "He knows me well as a person. LSU feels like the parts of my town where I grew up. It’s been fun down there so far."

Despite taking official visits to TCU, Texas and Texas A&M, Williams ultimately followed his instincts.

"Ultimately, I kinda knew it would be LSU this Spring, but still wanted to give other schools a chance," Williams said. "But the more I visited Baton Rouge, the more I knew this was my home."

Zion Williams' junior season stats highlight his impact on the field, with 37 tackles, 5 tackles for loss (TFL) and 3 sacks. His sophomore year was equally impressive, recording 31 tackles, 4 TFL and 3 sacks.
