Hugh Freeze's Auburn receives commitment of elite wide receiver in the Class of 2025
Three-star wide receiver Erick Smith committed to Auburn for the 2025 class, joining his twin brother, four-star receiver Derick Smith. Derick flipped his commitment from Alabama to Auburn in July and influenced Erick’s decision after the twins visited Hugh Freeze's program together during Auburn's 17-7 loss against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Erick is ranked as the No. 236 wide receiver in the 2025 class and the No. 74 recruit in Alabama by 247Sports. He becomes Auburn’s 27th commitment in a class that now ranks No. 6 nationally and No. 5 in the Southeastern Conference.
The commitment also makes Erick the third wide receiver in the 2025 cycle, joining Derick and three-star recruit Sam Turner. Deuce Knight, Anquon Fegans and Jared Smith are some of the crown jewels of this cycle.
Both Erick and Derick have been instrumental in Selma High School's (Alabama) 9-2 season, capped by a 36-35 win over Hillcrest-Evergreen on Friday.
Erick Smith shares the reasons behind his Auburn commitment
Erick Smith has received offers from multiple programs, including Alabama A&M, Auburn, Alabama, Appalachian State, North Alabama and Alabama State. But Auburn stood out due to its honest approach.
"They don’t sugarcoat anything and always show family-like and like a father figure," Smith told Auburn Undercover. "I don’t want a coach that shows different sides of themselves, I want them to show their true colors and he does exactly that.”
Besides Hugh Freeze, Auburn wide receiver coach JaMarcus Shephard also heavily recruited him.
"Coach Freeze and Coach Davis treat me like I'm family," Smith said (via Rivals). "They treated me like I was a priority, too. Auburn felt like home."
While Auburn is currently enduring a tough season, sitting at 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Southeastern Conference, Smith remains confident in the program’s direction.
"They're gonna let you know they want you every chance they get," Smith said.
Smith is scheduled to return to Auburn for an official visit later this month. The date is yet to be finalized, but he is planning for a weekend visit. For now, his attention is focused on his high school season, as Selma High prepares to face Montgomery Academy this Friday.
