"I feel really good about my commitment to Michigan": Four-star safety commit Kainoa Winston reaffirms his commitment

Maliha

Four-star safety Kainoa Winston continues to be one of the most highly-regarded prospects in Michigan’s 2025 recruiting class. The standout at Gonzaga High School in Washington D.C. has shown a strong commitment to the Wolverines by frequently expressing his enthusiasm for Sherrone Moore’s program on social media.

Despite questions about Michigan’s future in the post-Jim Harbaugh era, Winston remains firm in his decision.

“I feel really good about my commitment to Michigan," Winston told On3. "I like how it’s like Gonzaga — great education and hard-nosed football."

This was not the first time Winston had reaffirmed his commitment to Michigan. He was in attendance during the school's BBQ back in July and opened up about his commitment status, saying,

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m 100 percent Michigan."

Winston made an official visit to Michigan on May 31, where he met with new Michigan secondary coach LaMar Morgan and new defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. The coaches discussed his potential fit within the school's defensive schemes, and just two weeks later, he officially committed to Michigan, choosing the Wolverines over North Carolina, Oregon and Penn State.

Michigan's 2025 class ranks No. 14 in the nation with 16 committed players.

Kainoa Winston's athletic profile

According to Andrew Ivins, 247 Sports’ Director of Recruiting, Kainoa Winston possesses the straight-line speed crucial to counter today’s fast-paced passing attacks. His agility and fluidity in the lower body make him capable of manning up against other offensive players.

Winston is ranked by On3 as the No. 112 overall player in the nation, the No. 9 safety in the 2025 class and the No. 1 recruit in Washington, D.C. 247 Sports places him as the No. 43 overall player in the nation, the No. 3 safety in the cycle and the No. 1 recruit in the state.

Winston is expected to play as a nickelback, a role similar to that of former Michigan star Mike Sainristil. He is an accomplished sprinter, holding the Gonzaga College High School record in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.58 seconds. He also won the DCSAA Indoor Track & Field Championship as a sophomore.

Kainoa Winston is the cousin of Kevin Winston Jr., a defensive back at Penn State and a former four-star recruit from the 2022 class.
