"I think that's definitely the best group of linebacker recruits": Ohio State LB commit Eli Lee hails Buckeyes' loaded 2025 squad

Ohio State’s track record of success in linebacker recruiting is undeniable. This was reinforced last year with the commitment of Eli Lee, a standout from Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio. The coach Ryan Day-led Buckeyes were the first major program to offer Lee a scholarship for their 2025 class, and their confidence in his abilities quickly paid off.

Lee visited OSU in June to connect with fellow linebacker commits Tarvos Alford and Riley Pettijohn. The 6-foot-2.5, 225-pound LB got the chance to spend more time with Pettijohn, someone he hadn’t previously interacted with much.

"It’s awesome to get all three of us," Lee told Lettermen Row. "I think that’s definitely the best group of linebacker recruits that any school has by far so it’s really cool. It’s gonna be fun practicing and getting better with those guys and competing.”

In April, Eli Lee was named the positional MVP for linebackers by the Under Armour camp staff. His sure tackling ability is highly sought after, and Ohio State has secured a gem in him. With Alford and Pettijohn also in the lineup, Lee sees immense potential for the Buckeyes’ linebacker room.

“I love seeing them getting big boys for in front of the linebackers," Lee said. "I mean, it just helps me out more. I love getting all of them. So it’s real nice.”

Beyond the talent on the field, Ohio State’s personal touch has kept Lee committed and excited about his future with the program. Buckeyes linebackers coach James Laurinaitis attended Lee's high school's showcase on May 16. Lee has forged a close relationship with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who was also present at one of the Knights’ showcases.

Ohio State commit Eli Lee reveals his plans for the upcoming season

Eli Lee received offers from Akron, Central Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, Iowa State, Massachusetts, Toledo and West Virginia. He has already marked his journey as the first linebacker in Ohio State's 2025 recruiting class.

Despite the excitement surrounding his future with the Buckeyes, Lee remains focused on the present and his high school career.

“Right now I’m just focused mainly on my high school season and playing as best as I possibly can," Lee told Letterman Row. "Finally winning a state championship after going 0-for-3 but it’s all preparation to get to Ohio State. I gotta play well. That is the next step which I’m excited for.”

Lee's game is marked by his exceptional speed, enabling him to cover the field from sideline to sideline. His tackling technique is also solid, excelling in one-on-one situations where he can either bring down the ball carrier or hold them up until help arrives.

Eli Lee is the No. 36 prospect in Ohio and the No. 74 linebacker in the 2025 class, according to On3. 247Sports lists him as the No. 17 prospect in Ohio and the No. 62 linebacker in the cycle. His rankings may not fully capture his potential, but Ohio State clearly sees a bright future for him.
