"If you take a shot at my kid and you want to get in a fight": Kirk Herbstreit sends bold message to pushback on his son's commitment to Michigan
Chase Herbstreit, a three-star quarterback from Cincinnati’s St. Xavier High School, made headlines on Dec. 8, when he committed to play football at the University of Michigan for the Class of 2025.
The 6-foot-2, 185-pound signal-caller capped off his high school career with an impressive 28 touchdowns, guiding his team to a regional final. He becomes the 23rd recruit in Sherrone Moore’s first recruiting class at Michigan, joining five-star quarterback signee Bryce Underwood.
This decision drew considerable attention due to Chase’s family ties. His father, ESPN analyst and former Ohio State quarterback Kirk Herbstreit, spent his college years in Columbus and has always been deeply connected to the Buckeyes. Despite Chase growing up as a fervent Ohio State fan, the Buckeyes did not extend a scholarship offer, citing constraints tied to roster management.
Kirk Herbstreit addressed the public reaction on the "Pardon My Take" podcast:
“I haven’t seen a whole lot of reaction intentionally, just because I know people are thrilled, 20% are going to be jacka**es. So I just decided, it’s one thing to take shots at me, but if you take a shot at my kid and you want to get in a fight, it’s not hard for me to want to do that.
"So I just, I just try to ignore that stuff the best that I can, and just kind of stay focused on the positive.”
While Kirk said he was staying neutral in his son’s recruiting process, he expressed pride in Chase’s choice:
“What an opportunity for him. You know that this is a kid that grew up a lifelong Ohio State fan, of all my kids, like he’s the guy that cried when they lose games, like he’s the Ohio State junkie. Well, the new world that you’re referring to, this red share football, is going to be affected, but it’s going to go down to 105, so you can only have 105 guys on your team.”
Chase Herbstreit earns Michigan opportunity amid changing college football dynamics
Chase Herbstreit will join Michigan as the second quarterback in its 2025 recruiting class. Though he sits on the fringe of scholarship players, close to preferred walk-on status, Michigan provided him the chance to compete at the highest level.
Kirk Herbstreit discussed the challenges on "Pardon My Take":
"Now you could put 105 on scholarship, but a lot of these guys are not, they’re just kind of in a wait and see approach. Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, the schools that he was looking at the most. They’re almost like, ‘Hey, why don’t you go to the MAC? We’re going to bring in this portal guy who we know a little bit more about.’
“And they’re really not into developing young players and investing and hoping that they become a great player. So he got a huge opportunity to do this from Sherrone Moore and his staff. I think they’ve seen his competitive spirit, his fire and what he did on the field this year to give him this opportunity.”
In his two seasons with St.Xavier, the quarterback amassed 3,120 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 13 interceptions across 26 games. On the ground, he added 685 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.
