Kalen DeBoer's Alabama loses commitment of four-star DL in the Class of 2026
Four-star defensive lineman Vodney Cleveland decommitted from Alabama's 2026 class on Monday. The standout from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama, has been committed to the Crimson Tide since October.
Cleveland confirmed his decommitment news on X, writing:
"Please respect my decision."
Cleveland's commitment seemed strong, as he had developed a great bond with Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer and assistant coach Freddie Roach. In fact, the decommitment comes a week after he reaffirmed his loyalty to Alabama, saying (via AL):
“I love Alabama. I don’t plan on changing my commitment. “I love coach Roach and coach DeBoer. Coach Roach has been with me for over two years. He always has a smile on his face, but he knows when to go to work.”
Cleveland has recorded 46 total tackles this season. He is the No. 79 prospect and No. 6 defensive lineman in the 2026 cycle and the No. 5 recruit in Alabama, according to the On3 Industry Rankings.
Vodney Cleveland's decommitment is a big blow for Alabama's 2026 class, as he was the Crimson Tide’s first commitment for the cycle. The Crimson Tide's class also had commitments from cornerback Jamarrion Gordon, interior offensive lineman Zykie Helton and cornerback Dorian Barney, all of whom later backed off their pledges.
Vodney Cleveland opens up his decision to decommit from Alabama
Vodney Cleveland's decommitment was not a move that Alabama expected. However, despite stepping back from his initial pledge, the Crimson Tide remain in the mix as he re-evaluates his recruitment.
“I love Coach (Freddie) Roach and I’m still considering Alabama," Cleveland told On3. "I talked with my family and I feel like I made a decision too early in my process and want to make sure I’m making the best decision for my future."
Kalen DeBoer managed to sign only two in-state prospects in his first recruiting cycle. His success out of state has silenced many concerns, but regaining Cleveland’s commitment would send a strong message about the Crimson Tide's ability to lock down homegrown talent.
Vodney Cleveland has also expressed interest in several programs, including LSU, Oregon, Miami, Georgia, Ohio State, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas and USC.
