Kentucky's QB commit Stone Saunders breaks Pennsylvania all-time passing touchdown record

Maliha

Kentucky three-star quarterback commit Stone Saunders has been a dominant force in Pennsylvania high school football since he first joined Bishop McDevitt. As a sophomore, he led the Crusaders to the 2022 state championship, and the team is maintaining that momentum this year as well with a strong 5-1 record.

On Friday, Saunders wrote his name in the history books during a 28-21 win over Altoona. Per MaxPreps, he broke the state's all-time record for passing touchdowns, previously held by Steelton-Highspire alum Alex Erby.

Saunders surpassed Erby's 176-touchdown mark by tossing his 177th career touchdown, which was a 38-yard floater to Dom Diaz-Ellis just two plays into Friday's matchup. The 6-foot-0.5, 205-pound signal-caller finished the game with 153 passing yards and two touchdowns, pushing his season total to 20.

Saunders' ability to light up the scoreboard was on full display just a week prior when he threw for 251 yards and six touchdowns in a 56-7 win over Carlisle. So far in the 2024 season, he has thrown for over 1,200 yards and boasts over 11,000 career passing yards, making him just the third player in Pennsylvania high school history to reach this milestone.

Stone Saunders can threaten several other records held by Erby, including career passing yards (13,567), single-season touchdowns (61) and career completions (773). Bishop McDevitt’s upcoming matchup against Cumberland Valley on Oct. 4 will provide him another opportunity to add to his legacy as one of the top high school quarterbacks in the state.

Stone Saunders' Kentucky commitment update

Stone Saunders committed to Kentucky over a year ago, choosing the Wildcats over Georgia, Michigan and Nebraska, among others. He was originally recruited by former Kentucky offensive coordinator Liam Coen. However, he has maintained his commitment to the school despite the transition to new offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan.

In June, Saunders took his official visit to Kentucky with a large group of fellow recruits, during which he solidified his decision to stay committed to the Wildcats. He spent significant time with Hamdan during the visit and expressed his confidence in his choice, saying (via On3):

“I sat down with him for like an hour and a half in the beginning of the day, just sat down and talked about me and the offense and talked about him and how he got here. What his goals are for the next couple of seasons and about the offense in general. I feel very comfortable.”

Kentucky has a total of 17 committed players to its 2025 class, which ranks No. 23 in the nation and No. 22 in the Southeastern Conference. Besides Stone Saunders, the Wildcats have three-star quarterback Brennen Ward committed to the cycle.
