North Carolina QB Max Johnson injured in the season opener against Minnesota

Max Johnson suffered a right leg injury in the third quarter in the North Carolina Tar Heels' season opener against Minnesota on Thursday. UNC won the game 19-17.

“We looked at [Johnson],” senior linebacker Power Echols said, “We said, ‘We got you. We’re going to win this for you.’”

Max Johnson transferred from Texas A&M and won the starting position following the departure of NFL draft pick Drake Maye. Johnson was injured when his leg bent after Minnesota's Justin Walley sacked him.

Despite the third-down pass not being caught by the Gophers, a penalty extended the drive, and Noah Burnette managed to make the second kick of his four field goal attempts.

Last season, Max Johnson played eight games for the Tar Heels. He completed 62.1% (118-of-190) of the passes for 1,452 yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. He rushed for 27 yards and two TDs.
