Michigan State faced Michigan at Michigan Stadium on Saturday night, ultimately falling 24-17. This win elevates the Wolverines' record to 3-2 in the Big Ten and 5-3 overall this season. Michigan offensive line commits Andrew Babalola and Avery Gach were in attendance during the game.

The Michigan State-Michigan matchup has a rich tradition dating back to 1953, when the winner was first awarded the Paul Bunyan Trophy. Following the game, Babalola and Gach were spotted celebrating with the trophy in the locker room.

The Paul Bunyan Trophy was originally donated by then-Governor G. Mennen Williams. The trophy features the legendary giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan, who is standing atop a map of Michigan.

The 117th meeting between these rivals showed the fierce competitiveness that defines their encounters. The game even witnessed a confrontation between Michigan tight end Colston Loveland and Michigan State defensive end Anthony Jones, who engaged in a shoving match.

As the game progressed, the Wolverines held a 24-10 lead in the fourth quarter. The Spartans staged a late rally by narrowing the gap to 24-17 with just minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Michigan State, its hopes for a dramatic comeback were dashed when it was stopped on a critical fourth down attempt at the Michigan 16-yard line, sealing the Wolverines' victory.

Michigan will need to maintain the performance displayed in this rivalry game as it prepares for a challenging matchup against No. 1 Oregon next Saturday.

Andrew Babalola believes in Sherrone Moore's vision

Andrew Babalola committed to Michigan over Auburn, Oklahoma, Stanford and Missouri last week. His pledge came following the ugly 21-7 loss against Illinois on Oct. 5. While questions keep rising around coach Sherrone Moore's ability to ensure a successful transition from the Jim Harbaugh era, Babalola has firm belief in the coach.

“The reason why Michigan won out overall is I believe in coach Moore’s vision," Babalola told On3. "Obviously it’s tough sledding right now, but overall I love that program."

Babalola acknowledged the current difficulties but mentioned his enthusiasm for the program, saying:

“Love the coaches, the players, the recruiting class. It just came down to me believing in Coach Moore and believing in Michigan. I can’t wait to be a part of the family.”

Andrew Babalola is the only five-star prospect in Michigan's 2025 recruiting class, which has been boosted from No. 16 to No. 12 in the nation following his commitment. The majority of players in this cycle are blue-chip prospects.
