"Probably charged then $10k just to show up": CFB fans react to 5-star QB Bryce Underwood attending the Michigan Wolverines tailgate event
Bryce Underwood is going to Michigan after his surprise flip last week sent shockwaves in the world of high school and college football. The No. 1-ranked five-star prospect and Michigan native attended last Saturday's HailGate tailgate and it certainly had many football fans talking.
Michigan fans were excited about Bryce Underwood coming to Michigan next year. However, many non-Michigan fans expressed their displeasure at Underwood turning his back on his previous commitment to LSU.
There was also the fact that Michigan offered him a multi-million dollar NIL deal and the flip made him look like a cash grabber.
"Probably charged then $10k just to show up 😂😂," wrote one person on X.
"Kid cares more about money than winning . Not good," tweeted another.
"Just a week ago when he was at LSU fans Michigan fans were attacking his character." wrote another.
However, on the Michigan side, many were just happy that Bryce Underwood is staying home.
"HailGate is great! Bryce is a man of the people." said a fan.
"Damn. That’s bad ass," added another.
"Woohoo Go Blue💙," another Michigan fan replied.
In Michigan, he is being hailed as the hometown hero and may be the one leading the Wolverines back to glory after a slow start this season.
The school used several ways to get him to flip, from a rumored $12 million NIL deal to having former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady call him via FaceTime. In the end, Underwood flipped and announced his big decision on Instagram.
Michigan Wolverines staffer may have also helped make Bryce Underwood flip
Why Bryce Underwood flipped is still unknown, but several factors were in play, including that supposed multi-million dollar NIL deal and Brady reportedly offering to mentor him. Also, there is the possibility of not getting much playing time at LSU.
However, a new theory has come up, and it is the fact that Underwood's former offensive coordinator now works for Michigan.
During that same tailgate, he was photographed with Connor Stalions, who used to work for both Belleville High School, where Underwood goes, and Michigan. However, he resigned from his Michigan job because of the sign stealing scandal last year.
The NCAA itself investigated Stalions for his alleged sign-stealing and this led to his resignation. He is not with Belleville anymore, but analysts like The Athletic's Stewart Moore have noted that he still has much influence, even attending the Hailgate tailgate.
