Hunter was a cornerback and wide receiver with the Eagles at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia. In his sophomore season, he got the seven interceptions record of the county and caught 49 passes for 919 yards and 12 touchdowns.

His third year in high school was outstanding as he intercepted a total of eight balls and made 51 tackles and 137 catches for 1,746 yards and 24 touchdowns, gaining the award of MaxPreps Georgia Player of the Year.

Travis Hunter was ranked the top recruit by 247Sports and Rivals and No. 2 by ESPN, trailing only Walter Nolen. Initially committed to Florida State in 2020, he switched to Jackson State in December 2021 to play under coach Deion Sanders, a Florida State alumnus.

In 2023, Travis Hunter transferred to the University of Colorado, following coach Sanders. In his FBS debut, he played 147 snaps on both offense and defense, contributing to a thrilling 45-42 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs.

Travis Hunter receives high praise from his high school coach Drew Swick

As Travis Hunter gears up for the 2024 season, widely regarded as the best overall player in college football, his former high school coach, Drew Swick of Collins Hill High School, reminisced about coaching the young star.

Swick shared his thoughts in an interview with DNVR in February, highlighting Hunter’s exceptional qualities and his ongoing connection to his alma mater.

“Travis is a great ambassador for Collins Hill. He’s got immense support here and makes a point to return every summer to engage with the kids and show his face. With his brother Trayvis now at Collins Hill, I expect we’ll be seeing even more of him,” Swick said.

On Hunter’s versatility, Swick said:

“Offensively, he’s just as talented. He can undoubtedly play either position in the NFL. His abilities at corner are unmatched; he’s incredibly twitchy, his first step out of a break and his play recognition allow him to make plays, and then his athleticism takes over.”

Reflecting on his first impression of Travis Hunter, Swick said:

“It was during his freshman year practice. When you hear about a freshman ready for varsity, you’re skeptical. But Travis, who came from Florida, was extraordinary. We had a top receiver that year, and Travis managed to shut him down and secure a senior’s spot at cornerback. It was like witnessing a future star.”

In 2023, Travis Hunter shined for the Buffaloes, tallying 57 receptions, 721 yards and five touchdowns, along with 30 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups.
