"That's not sportsmanship": Former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton shares his views on viral high school football trend
Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has voiced concerns over a rising trend in high school football where players slap each other with a belt after games. This postgame ritual has gained popularity on social media, but Newton strongly disapproves.
"Kids are literally shaking the opponent's hand at the end of the game, and they're slapping each person with a belt," he said on Tuesday on 4th & 1 with Cam Newton. "Coaches, if you allow this, you need your a** beat. Because the truth of the matter is this: that's not sportsmanship. You're antagonizing a person for a very emotional game."
"We don't wanna do anything triggering that's going to put ourselves in harm's way. If somebody had ever put a belt, put a rag, put anything and touched me at the end of the game, it's over with.
Newton also had strong words for coaches.
"But for the coaches who allow this, if you're doing that and I see you doing it, I'm gonna tell you what you're doing is lame."
In his NFL career, Newton recorded 32,382 yards for 194 touchdowns and 123 interceptions. He also rushed for 5,628 yards and 75 touchdowns. He was the NFL MVP in 2015.
He led the Auburn Tigers to a national championship in 2010 and won the Heisman Trophy.
