"There’s another one ???": Fans react as 4-star forward Cam Ward commits to Tom Izzo's Michigan State
Amid the commitment season, Michigan State secured the services of four-star forward Cam Ward. This marks their second commitment after coach Tom Izzo received a commitment from another four-star recruit, Jordan Scott. The No. 53 recruit Ward took to Instagram to announce his decision.
However, some fans confused the 6-foot-7 shooting guard with the Miami Hurricanes quarterback who is also named Cam Ward.
Fans took to Instagram to share their reactions to the commitment post:
Some fans were surprised about another college athlete being named Cam Ward, playing a different sport, while one fan took a dig at the Columbia, Texas native.
"There’s another one ???," one fan commented.
"We got a Cam Ward playing basketball now," another fan said.
"At least this Cam Ward isn't scared of the Big 10," one fan quipped.
While Michigan State fans cheered his commitment, ESPN's National Director of Recruiting Paul Biancardi gave his take on the player:
"Big time player and winner. Demonstrated versatility on both ends of the floor. A dedicated worker who knows his strengths and current limitations," Paul Biancardi was full of praise for Ward.
"Let's go. Keep that MSU going," a Michigan fan said.
"Tears of joy", another fan wrote.
Ward ranks at No. 12 in his position and No. 2 in Maryland. With offers from plenty top programs across the nation, Ward chose Michigan over the likes of Maryland, Virginia and Notre Dame.
How good is Cam Ward?
The four-star recruit is an exceptional talent. In the Nike EYBL season, Ward averaged 20 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 56% from the floor. The 2023-24 Gatorade Player of the Year also averaged a double-double last season, scoring 26.0 ppg, 11.5 rpg, 2.7 apg and 2.7 spg.
While speaking to On3, Ward explained why he chose Michigan:
“Taking a visit and just seeing the atmosphere, it was crazy,” Ward said. “Coach Izzo has a very detailed plan on how he’s going to use me within the offense and use me within the defense."
