VJ Edgecombe School stats: Looking at the early career of Baylor Bears' highest-ranked basketball recruit in the last decade

VJ Edgecombe is in his freshman year at Baylor University. He is also their highest-ranked recruit in the last decade for basketball, being ranked No. 3 overall by ESPN and No. 5 overall by 247Sports. As a five-star prospect, he is considered one of the best in his class.

A native of Bimini, the Bahamas, Edgecombe and his family immigrated to the US when he was in ninth grade and he attended school there. He eventually transferred to Long Island Lutheran, and there, he and the Crusaders won the New York State championship during his junior year.

As a senior, he led Long Island Lutheran to a 21-5 record, averaging 17.3 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals. Edgecombe was also selected as a 2024 McDonald's All-American Boys and also played at the Jordan Brand Classic and the Nike Hoop Summit.

During the 2024 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Valencia, Spain, Edgecombe represented his home country, the Bahamas, playing alongside NBA stars like Deandre Ayton and Eric Gordon.

Edgecombe's prowess as a player attracted many colleges, including Alabama, Duke, Florida, Kentucky, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, St. John's, and UConn. However, he eventually signed with the Baylor Bears, which edged out Duke and Kentucky in his final three choices.

Edgecombe has an NBA potential as well, with many saying the Bahamian is a one-and-done and possibly going as high as being the No. 2 NBA draft, according to a mock draft.

What do scouts say about VJ Edgecombe?

Throughout his high school career, VJ Edgecombe has shown much improvement as he was originally rated the No. 153 recruit in the Class of 2024 by 247Sports. However, during his junior year, the Bahamian had a breakout performance in the Adidas 3SSB travel circuit, leading him to go to the top five of the rankings.

Adam Finkelstein, the director of scouting for 247Sports, noted that VJ Edgecombe is an athletic scorer who is very good in transition and can place a lot of pressure on the rim as he is also known for his highlight finishes.

As a Baylor Bear, VJ Edgecombe recently went up against Arkansas last Sunday. The team won 72-67, with the freshman scoring 11 points, with eight rebounds and five assists.

Edgecombe made headlines this week after a poster dunk in the loss to Gonzaga, where he slammed Mark Few's son, Joe. While Gonzaga won 101-63, the dunk was one of the main highlights of the game. See for yourself:

It will be interesting to watch VJ Edgecombe develop and see if he can become the NBA superstar many are predicting.
