Watch: No. 1 prospect Aaliyah Chavez names recent WNBA champion as someone she would like to take on a 1v1
Basketball phenom Aaliyah Chavez seems to be everywhere, impressing with her precise passing, swift rebounding and robust defense. She appears to be unstoppable, with her 37.8 points per game speaking for her talent.
The 5-foot-11 point guard from Monterey High School in Lubbock, Texas, could take anyone on, but is there anyone in particular she would like to play one-on-one?
Well, the No. 1 player in the Class of 2025 has answered that question. In a video posted Monday by nbafuturestartsnow on Instagram titled "Get to Know Aaliyah Chavez," the elite point guard revealed, among many other things, the one player she would like to take head-on.
Chavez named WNBA superstar Sabrina Ionescu as her dream opponent.
“I think our games are similar," Chavez said. "She's a shooter, and I'm a shooter, so I definitely think it would be a good matchup.”
Chavez’s video also garnered attention for a trivial mistake. When asked if she had any NBA connections, she named two-time All-Star Isaiah Thomas. However, she mistakenly referred to him as "Thompson."
Despite the slipup, she described her close relationship with Thomas and how she deeply relates to his inspiring story. But fans caught the mistake and didn't miss the chance to playfully point it out in the comments.
Is Aaliyah Chavez Going to Commit to Oklahoma?
Aaliyah Chavez is the most sought-after prospect, and universities are lining up with offers to get her on board. She has narrowed her choices down to six, although she has at least 27 offers, according to 247Sports.
Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, South Carolina, Texas Tech and UCLA are all vying for the young point guard. Aaliyah officially visited Oklahoma on Friday, fueling speculation that she is soon to be a Sooner. Adding weight to that is the On3 recruitment prediction, which gave Oklahoma a 51.6% chance of securing the highest-ranked recruit in the Class of 2025.
At one point, Texas seemed the likely destination for Aaliyah Chavez, but her recent visit to Oklahoma has flipped the scenario and made things more fuzzy. Will Aaliyah Chavez don the Sooners jersey? It's not certain, but the chances are high.
