"Y’all got time to delete this": Football fans react to five-star Georgia Bulldogs commit Isaiah Gibson calling Cam Newton the QB GOAT
Isaiah Gibson, a five-star defensive end from Warner Robins, Georgia, stirred up a social media debate with his recent comments. While appearing on Overtimeszn with Dorian Brew, Gibson called the former NFL quarterback Cam Newton the "QB GOAT."
Initially committed to the USC Trojans, Gibson has since changed course and joined the Georgia Bulldogs. When asked which NFL player he idolized growing up, Gibson named Newton, igniting a heated debate among fans.
The response on social media was immediate and intense. One fan sarcastically responded,
"Y’all got time to delete this"
while another compared Newton unfavorably to seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, saying,
"Ah yes, a QB who’s never won a Super Bowl is better than 7x Super Bowl champ Tom Brady."
Here is how other fans were reacting,
Cam Newton's powerful combination of size, athleticism, and skill significantly impacted his NFL career. He was drafted first overall by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. His 2015 season was outstanding, leading the Panthers to a 15-1 record, winning NFL MVP honors, and reaching the Super Bowl.
In his career, Newton amassed 32,382 passing yards, 194 passing touchdowns, and 75 rushing touchdowns, earning three Pro Bowl selections.
However, injuries began to hamper Newton’s performance as he reached his late twenties. A 2017 shoulder injury notably diminished his throwing ability, which led to a decline in his game.
After a short stint with the New England Patriots in 2020 and a return to the Panthers in 2021, Newton struggled to get back on track.
Isaiah Gibson cited relationships and coaching environment as reasons behind his Georgia flip
On June 24, Georgia football continued its recruiting dominance by securing a commitment from five-star edge rusher Isaiah Gibson. Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 245 pounds, Gibson became Georgia’s second commit that day, joining a class of 15 recruits.
Initially committed to USC in March, Gibson reconsidered after three months, decommitting alongside fellow Georgia target Justus Terry.
Reflecting on his brief commitment to USC, Isaiah Gibson told Sports Illustrated,
“I will say just me and Justus, we really committed at the same time. It was just the overall environment of USC, I saw that everybody [was] happy. At the moment, I [felt] like that was [the place] I wanted to be for sure.”
Speaking to On3, Isaiah Gibson highlighted his relationship with Georgia’s coaching staff and the proximity to home as major factors:
“I have those relationships with Georgia. I am close to the coaching staff, it is a school close to home and I have relationships with the coaches and the team. That made a big difference for me.”
Isaiah Gibson's 2023-24 stats include 15 total tackles, 2 sacks, 11 quarterback hurries, and 1 fumble recovery, signaling his potential impact for the Bulldogs.
