Brothers (2024) ending explained: How did Jady and Moke escape?
Brothers, directed by Max Barbakow, is an action comedy movie released exclusively on Prime Video. Starring Josh Brolin, Peter Dinklage, and Marisa Tomei, the narrative revolves around former criminal Moke, played by Brolin, who is attempting to live an honest life.
However, his twin brother, Jady, convinces him to join in for one final heist. The two then embark on a dangerous road trip, on which they must resolve their age-old differences in order to survive. The movie’s climax takes the two brothers to a thrilling gunfight in an abandoned mall.
Spurred into a life of crime by their mother Cath, played by Glenn Close, Jady and Moke survive being caught by the authorities due to a poignant sacrifice from their mother. Thus, the narrative takes viewers through a thrilling tale of redemption. Cath, recognizing that it was her fault that both of her children grew up to be criminals, decides to take the heat instead of them.
Brothers ends with a poignant sacrifice from Glenn Close’s character
Cath Munger, Jady and Moke’s mother, had left them when the two were young. It had been 30 years since she went missing, and the two had embarked on a life of crime in her absence. The two’s dysfunctional relationship was partly due to Cath’s approach towards them.
Years prior, after a heist, Cath had told her children she had "no use for them," which was why she had left them behind. Regardless, as grown-ups, Moke and Jady were eventually caught by the police during one of their heists. While Moke escaped, Jady returned after striking a deal with a prison guard.
This was in exchange for the emeralds that Moke told the guard he still had possession of. However, his plan was based on the knowledge that Glenn, his mother’s partner all those years ago, had swallowed the emeralds in order to avoid police detection. Jady wanted his brother to accompany him on a road trip in order to retrieve these emeralds, by digging up Glenn’s grave.
Why did Jady not tell Moke the truth?
There were several reasons why Jady did not reveal the truth to Moke. Firstly, he wanted to keep the emeralds for himself. While Jady was easy to convince for ‘one final heist,’ the nature of the plan would have meant that Moke would have refused. Further, Jady even got his brother fired from his job in order to force him for the ‘one final heist.’
Cath, assumed to be missing by both the brothers initially, had actually contacted Jady, who kept it a secret from his brother. Hence, Jady was also worried that Moke would not help him if he found out that even their mother was involved in the plan.
However, along the way, Moke discovers that it was his own family that had led to his firing, as well as the fact that Cath was also involved in this new plan.
How were Jady and Moke able to escape?
Towards the movie's end, Jody and Moke are caught by Farful (played by Brendan Fraser), who has also been behind the emeralds right from the start. However, despite knowing that her sons are in danger, Cath decides to flee with the emeralds, which leaves both the brothers disheartened.
Farful is left with no choice but to track Cath, even as her sons manage to escape on their own accord. They track Cath to a shopping mall where she is seen trying to sell the emeralds. However, with the police also closing in, the movie ends with a climactic conversation between the three family members.
At the end of it, a remorseful Cath gives herself up to the authorities, allowing her sons to escape. Brothers’ climax then delves into Moke entering a deal with the judge in charge of Jody’s case. He exchanges the money from the heist for the gun with his fingerprints on it.
Of course, still in possession of the emeralds that Cath had handed to them, the two brothers enjoy somewhat happy endings. While their mother has been taken in by the authorities, they have enough money to lead honest lives.
Brothers is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
