Directed by Jim Sheridan, Brothers is a psychological war thriller, which was released back in 2009. The movie is the remake of a 2004 Danish film of the same name, and follows a recently released prisoner of war named Sam Cahill.
The movie stars Tobey Maguire as Cahill, and also boasts stars such as Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal.
It has the following official synopsis, according to IMDB:
“While on tour in Afghanistan, Sam's helicopter is shot down and he is presumed dead. Back home, it is his screw-up brother who looks after the family. Sam does return, but with a lot of excess baggage.”
Gyllenhaal plays the role of Tommy, Sam’s brother, who gets close to his family, consisting of Grace (Portman), and two daughters named Isabelle and Maggie. Brothers revolves around the demands and the effects of war on soldiers. Sam is imprisoned as a POW in Afghanistan for months and is presumed dead at home.
Brothers will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video on October 17, 2024. It will also be available for rent and purchase on platforms such as Apple TV+.

Brothers met with a positive response upon its release in 2009. It revolves around themes of war, loss, and emotional turmoil. Sam returns home after months in Afghanistan, where he was taken in as a POW. However, her returns home to find that his brother Tommy has grown close to his family, especially his wife Grace.
Regardless, the movie is now available to be watched from the comfort of homes. It is available for both streaming and for purchase/rent on various online platforms. As far as subscription services go, Brothers is available on Amazon Prime, in addition to Hoopla and Plex.

Regardless, Brothers is a bit of a must-watch, considering the range of emotional themes the movie has to offer. It deals with themes of death and emotional loss. Grace, played by Natalie Portman, is seen coming to terms with the tragic loss of her husband in the first part of the movie.
She grows close to his brother, Tommy, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, who reminds her of her husband. The Jim Sheridan directorial then takes things up a notch in an emotional second half of the film. Upon his return, Sam, struggling with PTSD and the changes in his family, especially his wife, becomes easily irritable.
Brothers stars three familiar actors who have all been praised for their work in the movie. Tobey Maguire had won a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama in Brothers, while the movie was also nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes and received a nomination for Best Young Actor/Actress at the Critics' Choice Movie Awards.
The movie grossed only $43.5 million worldwide but is now set to get a second lease of life during its run on online platforms. Brothers is now available to be watched on multiple platforms such as Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Google Play, although it will need to be rented/purchased on the latter two.
