"We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait" - James Gunn talks about Batman 2 amidst cancellation rumours
James Gunn debunked rumors that Batman 2 has been canceled because of the delays. Warner Bros. officially confirmed the sequel to Robert Pattinson's Batman movie during CinemaCon 2022, but reports of the delay in the script and filming have been rampant. At first, the release was delayed to October 2026, but it has since pushed for another year, with the filming reportedly starting this year.
With the delays in the development, there has been chatter about whether or not the project will push through. DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, however, isn't worried and said that the project is ongoing. In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, published on June 10, 2025, he said:
"What Matt's [Reeves] doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait."
What James Gunn told Entertainment Weekly is the latest update on the sequel's development, but it wasn't the first time he debunked rumors that the sequel has been canceled.

In November 2024, he replied to a fan who questioned the cancellation rumor, saying:
"Like why would you even believe a random on social networking? Of course not. If it was canceled it would be canceled. Who has time for charades?"
He also said that they are eagerly awaiting Matt Reeves' script. Gunn also confirmed that Reeves will still direct Batman 2 in another response to a fan on X in May 2025.

As mentioned, Matt Reeves has been confirmed to direct the film. Robert Pattinson's first Batman movie came out in cinemas in March 2022, and per the latest updates, Batman 2 is expected to arrive in movie theaters on October 1, 2027, following a year-long delay.
It doesn't appear that the script has been finalized based on James Gunn's comments to Entertainment Weekly. However, in January, Reeves said that they will start filming the sequel in 2025. While he couldn't reveal any specifics about the Batman 2 development. But, he said on the Golden Globes red carpet, per Deadline:
"I can tell you that we'll be shooting this year."
Robert Pattinson also confirmed the production's plan to start filming the movie this year. When asked by Deadline when they will start shooting for Batman 2 during the London red carpet for the premiere of his Mickey 17 film in February, he said:
"End of the year."
The actor also joked that he started playing Batman when he was still young, but with the delays, he's going to be a "f**king old Batman" by the time they film the sequel. Meanwhile, in his interview with Deadline, Matt Reeves gave a vague teaser of what the sequel will be about. He said:
"We're doing something where the story continues from, but I hope that people will be surprised by."
So far, there are only two confirmed cast members for Batman 2. There's Robert Pattinson reprising his role as Bruce Wayne. Joining him is Colin Farrell, who will return as the Penguin. However, with the production expected to start by the end of the year, which is just a few months away, more casting news could be in the near future.
