Was Lil Durk fleeing to Dubai when he got arrested? Everything to know as judge denies rapper's bail, citing flight risk
On Monday, June 9, Lil Durk's bail request was denied by a California District Court. Judge Michael Fitzgerald, who oversaw the request, made the decision after agreeing with the prosecution that the incarcerated rapper—born Durk Banks—poses a flight risk, according to Courthouse News reports.
The prosecution asserts that if granted bail, there is no certainty Durk would appear for future court dates, posing an additional risk. Another reason cited by the prosecution for rejecting Lil Durk's bail request was that the Chicago rapper attempted to flee the country before his arrest in October 2024.
According to the media outlet, Durk was arrested on October 25 near Miami International Airport after being booked on multiple international flights, law enforcement reported at the time. The rapper faced murder-for-hire charges, along with five other members of OTF, his rap collective.
Lil Durk's lawyers disputed the claim, arguing in court that he was traveling to Dubai for both professional and spiritual reasons, as he had done many times before.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Fitzgerald stated:
"The court accepts that defendant has business and spiritual reasons to travel to the Middle East. There is no evidence that he intended to do so that day for any reason apart from the murder and resulting arrests of the codefendants."
Referring to the sentencing the rapper would face if convicted, the judge emphasized the flight risk, stating:
"The sentence is mandatory life in prison without parole, which would make any innocent defendant consider flight as the rational alternative."
In his bail bond, Banks offered to pay as much as $4.5 million for his bail and remain in home detention with private security monitoring him throughout the trial, Courthouse News reports. Judge Fitzgerald remained unconvinced that the amount would suffice, considering it was only a fraction of his net worth.
Lil Durk was sued for wrongful death by Saviay'a Robinson's family
The news of Lil Durk's bail bond denial comes months after the rapper was sued by the family of Saviay'a Robinson (stage name Lul Pab)—the 24-year-old cousin of Quando Rondo, who was killed in the targeted LA shooting on August 19, 2022.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the lawsuit was filed by Robinson's mother, Andrea Robinson, in Cook County court in February 2025, naming Durk, his business manager, his record label OTF, and a related company as defendants.
According to the news outlet, Warren Postman, an attorney representing Andrea Robinson in the suit, issued a statement about the lawsuit, saying:
"The premature loss of Mr. Robinson has devastated his family and community. We filed this lawsuit to hold those responsible accountable and to ensure his family receives the support they need during this difficult time."
In January 2025, XXL Magazine reported that Lil Durk's trial, which was initially set to begin on January 7, had been postponed for nine months, with the new trial date announced as October 14.
