3 disappointing New York Islanders players who are bounce-back candidates for next season feat. Anders Lee

Last season was a tale of ups and downs for the New York Islanders. The beginning of the year saw the Isles sink to the bottom of the Metro Division, seemingly out of playoff contention. Then, the arrival of Patrick Roy turned the club's fortunes, leading it to a playoff appearance.

But Roy’s arrival seemed to spark some slumping players. While these players had an overall down year, Roy’s influence helped improve their game, offering hope that they can turn things around this upcoming season.

So, here’s a look at three players who look poised to turn around a disappointing 2023-24 into a successful 2024-25 season.

3 disappointing New York Islanders players who are bounce-back candidates for 2024-25

#3: Pierre Engvall

Engvall didn’t have what you would call a down year based on his numbers alone. In 2022-23, he played in 76 games between the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs, scoring 17 goals and totaling 30 points.

However, Engvall managed 10 goals and 28 points in 74 games last season. While the overall totals are similar, the drop to 10 goals is disappointing as the Isles envisioned a top-six role for the speedy Swede.

This upcoming season, Engvall looks to play with center Jean-Gabriel Pageau and team captain Anders Lee in what could be one of the best third lines in the league. A full season under Patrick Roy should help all three players elevate their game, allowing them to bounce back.

#2: Jean-Gabriel Pageau

Pageau has been the subject of trade rumors for quite a while. However, the New York Islanders have been right to hold on to Pageau.

Despite a seven-point drop-off last season, Pageau seemed to turn things around during the second half last season. That bodes well as the Isles look to solidify their depth scoring. Like Engvall, Pageau should benefit from a full season of Patrick Roy behind the bench.

#3: Anders Lee

The 34-year-old saw his scoring slide last season. Lee registered back-to-back 28-goal seasons, only to see his totals dip to 20. While three consecutive 20-goal seasons are not bad, it’s not becoming of a former 40-goal scorer.

The addition of Anthony Duclair essentially pushes Lee out of the top six. But that could be a good thing, as pushing Lee down into the third line can help take off some pressure.

At this point, it’s uncertain whether Lee can return to his former 40-goal form. But a full season in which Lee can approach or surpass the 30-goal, 50-point mark would be a welcome production from the New York Islanders’ captain.
