3 disappointing Vegas Golden Knights players who are bounce-back candidates for next season feat. Tomas Hertl
Last season, the Vegas Golden Knights were eliminated in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs after winning the championship in the previous year. It was a disappointing season for the Golden Knights and some of its players.
Vegas has seen several key pieces leave in free agency, but if some players have bounce-back seasons, the Golden Knights could have success in 2024.
3 disappointing Vegas Golden Knights players who are bounce-back candidates
#1, Tomas Hertl
Tomas Hertl was a shocking trade deadline addition as the Vegas Golden Knights acquired him from the San Jose Sharks.
However, Hertl dealt with injuries for most of last season, as he skated in just 54 games between the Sharks and Golden Knights. In just six games with Vegas, he did have 2 goals and 2 assists.
Although Hertl had some success, it was more of a disappointing season due to the injury. If Hertl can stay healthy, there is a possibility he could lead the Golden Knights in scoring next season.
#2, Ivan Barbashev
Ivan Barbashev played a key role in the Vegas Golden Knights winning the Stanley Cup in 2023. Barbashev was acquired at the deadline from the St. Louis Blues and was a key offensive player for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.
However, last season, Barbashev took a step back as he recorded just 19 goals and 26 assists for 45 points. If Vegas is going to be a dominant team again, Barbashev should return to his form in 2021-22 where he was a 60+ point player.
If Barbashev can get to 60 points next season, it could mean Vegas' return to being one of the top teams in the NHL.
#3, Ilya Samsonov
The Vegas Golden Knights' starting goalie is Adin Hill and the team traded backup Logan Thompson to Washington at the NHL entry draft last June.
Vegas then signed Ilya Samsonov to be their backup goalie, which seems to be a better spot for him. Samsonov struggled in Toronto as a starter but will have a chance to shine in his new role.
Samsonov could be better as a backup and should be able to improve his 3.13 GAA and .890 SV% last season.
