3 Jeremy Swayman replacements for Boston Bruins if contract stalemate drags on before start of new season feat. Martin Jones
Boston Bruins’ RFA goaltender Jeremy Swayman will not be reporting to training camp, NHL.com reports. Bruins GM Don Sweeney told the media that Swayman is not expected to participate in activities until a contract is signed.
While Sweeney expressed his optimism that a deal will get done before the Dec. 1 deadline, the Bruins face the prospect of starting the season without Jeremy Swayman.
Currently, the only NHL goalie on the roster is Joonas Korpisalo, who was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the Linus Ullmark trade.
However, it's unclear who could back up Korpisalo if the Jeremy Swayman saga extends into the start of the regular season. So, here are three potential replacements for Swayman if the contract stalemate drags on.
Three Jeremy Swayman replacements for Boston Bruins if contract stalemate drags on
#3 Michael DiPietro
DiPietro is expected to be in camp with the Boston Bruins. While he was most likely headed to the AHL, the Jeremey Swayman situation could open the door for him to compete for the backup role.
However, DiPietro is largely inexperienced. He was a third-round selection of the Vancouver Canucks in 2017. After signing an entry-level deal, he only appeared in three games for the Canucks before signing with the Bruins.
DiPietro could get a shot at the backup job if he has a strong camp and solid preseason, but he will face plenty of competition.
#2 Brandon Bussi
The 26-year-old Bussi could be the likeliest of Boston’s minor league goalies to get a crack at the backup role this season. Last season, he was the main netminder with the Providence Bruins, posting a solid 2.67 GAA and a .913 SV% in 41 games.
While Bussi has no NHL experience, he could make the team out of camp if he shows his readiness. Nevertheless, the Bruins may be uncomfortable going with a highly inexperienced goaltender to back up Korpisalo, especially if he struggles early in the season.
The situation may prompt the Bruins to scour the market for an experienced NHL backup.
#1 Martin Jones
The Bruins could scrape the bottom of the free agent market by bringing in veteran Martin Jones on a PTO. Last season, he played with the Toronto Maple Leafs, playing a huge role when both goalies went down with injuries.
Overall, Jones played 22 games, posting a 2.87 GAA and a .902 SV%. He has proven that he can shoulder the starting role for short periods, giving the Bruins insurance until the situation with Jeremy Swayman is resolved.
Jones wouldn’t cost more than a league minimum deal. Moreover, the Bruins could place him on waivers, essentially risking nothing in doing so.
