3 major takeaways from Winnipeg Jets’ 6-3 win over Pittsburgh Penguins

The Winnipeg Jets took flight on Sunday afternoon against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins, earning a 6-3 victory at Canada Life Centre and improving to a perfect 5-0 through the first five games of the season.

Meanwhile, the Penguins have now lost two straight and sit at 3-4 through seven games.

While teams failed to light the lamp in the game's opening 20 minutes, the Penguins took a two-goal lead thanks to goals from Kevin Hayes (third goal of the season) and Lars Eller (third goal of the season). However, their lead quickly evaporated thanks to rapid fire from the host Jets.

Kyle Connor scored his fourth goal of the season, cutting Pittsburgh's lead in half.

Before long, the Jets knotted up the score thanks to the fifth goal of the campaign from Mark Scheifele just minutes later:

Vladislav Namestnikov would soon make his way onto the scoresheet, re-directing Nikolaj Ehlers' pass at the side of the net past goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic:

The Penguins responded early in the third period thanks to Eller's second goal of the contest. But once again, the Jets opened the offensive floodgates.

Captain Adam Lowry tallied his second goal, while Mason Appleton soon capitalized. Nino Niederreiter capped the scoring by hitting the empty net late in regulation, sealing the victory.

Take a look at the three biggest takeaways from the Winnipeg Jets' win

#1. Kyle Connor stayed red-hot

Thanks to Connor's goal, he has now scored in three straight games and also has reached the scoresheet in each of Winnipeg's first five games of the season.

#2. Jets fans mocked former draft pick Rutger McGroarty

A former draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets, forward Rutger McGroarty was traded to the Penguins for Brayden Yager after refusing to sign an entry-level contract with the team.

And though McGroarty is currently suiting up with Pittsburgh's American Hockey League affiliate club, it didn't stop the Jets fans in attendance from mocking their former prospect from afar with chants of "Where is Rutger?" and "Yager's better!"

#3. Goaltender Eric Comrie was strong between the pipes

Beginning his third tenure with the Winnipeg Jets, Comrie has also played for the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, and New Jersey Devils - but once again found his way back to Winnipeg during the offseason.

Starting in place of Connor Hellebuyck on Sunday, he turned aside 39 of 42 Penguins shots and picked up his first win of the year. Afterward, he was sure the give a shoutout to his teammates for their play in front of him.

“It’s awesome," Comrie said following the game. "The team played great in front of me. So that made it really easy on myself. These guys battled so hard all night long like they do every single night. Ernie does a great job lining up the system and the process, and I think we do a good job sticking to it, line after line after line, just keep building and building and building and keep following what he’s telling us.”

The Winnipeg Jets will attempt to remain undefeated when they take on the St. Louis Blues from Enterprise Center on Tuesday evening.
