3 reasons Connor McDavid shouldn’t sign an extension with Edmonton Oilers after his contract ends
Connor McDavid is nearing the end of his historic eight-year, $100 million deal with the Edmonton Oilers. After next year, he will be in prime position for an extension, one that could keep him as an Oiler for life. However, while that is enticing, there are a few reasons the Conn Smythe Trophy winner might want to pass on signing an extension with Edmonton.
Why Connor McDavid shouldn't get extended
#1 Loyalty is often unrewarded
Loyalty in modern sports is not very common. It's very rare for players to spend their entire careers with one team. Loyalty from players is often not rewarded, and there are plenty of examples across most leagues.
McDavid doesn't owe the Oilers his life, and if he wants to go elsewhere, he should. There will come a time when the Oilers believe him to be not good enough or too expensive, so they may move on. McDavid could be the one in charge of that instead and save some heartache.
#2 Money
A team like the Edmonton Oilers certainly knows what impact Connor McDavid or a player of his caliber has, but they have a top roster with plenty of stars to keep under contract. That makes it a little harder to throw money at McDavid, whereas a younger and perhaps up-and-coming team could throw him a blank check. That team might be worse, but McDavid is good enough to overcome that and he'd have a lot more financial stability in that scenario.
#3 Stanley Cup hangover
In all sports, teams that make it to the championship often have a bit of a hangover afterward. The next season is a little more challenging more times than not. It is especially true for those who fail to win.
Sometimes, one shot is all a team gets for a while, and that may be what plagues the Oilers. McDavid and company came so close and were crushed emotionally. McDavid, if he wants a ring, may have to consider the historical context of teams who lose like that.
