3 Tampa Bay Lightning players who might see a performance dip next season feat. Nikita Kucherov

The Tampa Bay Lightning are a team in transition. The departure of former captain Steven Stamkos ushers in a new era that promises to bring in new blood to lead the team back to the Stanley Cup Final.

Along the way, three Tampa Bay Lightning players stand out as candidates for a regression following successful seasons last year. So, here’s a closer look at three Tampa Bay Lightning players poised for a dip this upcoming season.

Three Tampa Bay Lightning who could see a performance dip next season

#3 Victor Hedman

Hedman is one of the league’s best blue-liners. He’s a Norris Trophy winner and poised to become the Tampa Bay Lightning’s next captain.

After another successful campaign where he registered 13 goals and 76 points, a regression may be on the horizon. Specifically, the departure of defense partner Mikhail Sergachev could impact Hedman’s overall production.

While Hedman has produced regardless of his partner, adjusting to a new partner may hold his production back until he settles in. Of course, fans shouldn’t expect to see Hedman’s production fall off a cliff, but a dip could be on the horizon.

#2 Brayden Point

Point has cemented himself as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s No. 1 center. His 46 goals and 90 points established him as one of the league’s top centers.

However, that successful season may prove difficult to replicate. While Point has the potential to eclipse the 100-point mark, it’s also possible that the departure of Steven Stamkos could impact Point’s production.

Additionally, Stamkos’ departure may influence the pressure put on Point to take the next step and become a truly elite NHL center. There’s no question that Point has the talent to do it.

However, the pressure may become significant to an extent that it could affect his overall performance.

#1 Nikita Kucherov

Kucherov played out of his mind last season. He topped 100 assists for the first time in decades. Most importantly, his 144 points topped the league last season.

So, is a regression on the horizon for Kucherov? Most likely, yes. Registering 100 assists once again will be no easy feat. Despite playing with a top-tier center in Brayden Point and newcomer Jake Guentzel, surpassing 144 points is unlikely for Kucherov.

On the whole, Kucherov should have no trouble breaking 100 points. While he may take home another Art Ross Trophy, it’s doubtful Kucherov can outdo himself next season.

Of course, anything is possible. Kucherov could have another monster year and break 150 points. But then again, a more realistic point total could be the likeliest outcome for the Russian superstar.
